I guess you missed a lot of history then? The 60s - assassinations, race riots, viet nam, hippies, drug culture, civil rights wars, etc, etc. do I even have to mention the 70s?? Disco itself was a tool of the antichrist. The pure greed and pastels of the 1980s.

Actually now with the recession behind us things aren't all that bad in this country.

Travel abroad to the third world and you can see what the rest of the world worries about - enough food, clean water, diseases, etc, etc. we live in the greatest country in the world with the greatest wealth, rights, privileges, etc. I feel sorry when folks don't realize this. You should be thanking god every day for being born in the United States of America. I do.

I am older that your are SP, I have lived through every single one of the events you name... I have also been to 3rd world countries as well........

The recession is not over with...

US slips back into recession

The US economy unexpectedly took its biggest plunge in more than three years last quarter, contracting at an annual rate of 0.1 percent and indicating a new level of vulnerability for the economy.

The plummet marks the first time the economy contracted since the Great Recession ended and is causing concern that the US could be headed further downhill. The economy shrank from October through December, which economists attribute to a large cut in spending, fewer exports and lagging growth in company stockpiles.

Defense spending contracted at a 22 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter and saw its biggest cut in 40 years, while business inventories sharply declined, indicating that businesses will need to buy more goods in the next quarter to restock their shelves. The Hurricane Sandy recovery effort also cut about 0.5 percentage points off of fourth-quarter growth.

Gross domestic product fell at a 0.1 percent annual rate, which is a dramatic decrease from the economy’s 3.1 percent growth rate in the third quarter, the Commerce Department reported. The US economy had not plummeted this deeply since the second quarter of 2009, when the Great Recession was in its final stages.

Alan Krueger, head of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, attributes the deep decline to the upcoming sequestration deadline.

"likely explanation for the sharp decline in federal defense spending is uncertainty concerning the automatic spending cuts that were scheduled to take effect in January, and are currently scheduled to take effect on March 1st," Krueger wrote in a White House blog post.
But uncertainty still exists as lawmakers have once again delayed a potential US default without coming up with a long-term budget plan. The new sequestration deadline could continue to harm the economy.

While a number of economists are hopeful that the deep contraction was a one-time event and the economy will spring back to life in the first quarter of 2013, the plummet should instead give policymakers a sense of urgency to deal with their outstanding budget issues. No economists predicted the contraction and they might also fail to predict any future declines.
Even though the fourth quarter’s deceleration may have been partially due to temporary factors, like the effects of Hurricane Sandy, it caused 2013 to begin with no momentum, and raises concern over a further decline in wake of another congressional budget battle and a looming sequestration deadline.

Fears over the effects of a fiscal cliff kept businesses from stocking up on inventories, but the fears of a US default could return in three months.
"Think of it as a giant hand holding down the economy," Tim Hopper, chief economist at TIAA-CRED told the Wall Street Journal about the uncertainty over the long-term budget. And with a recession still holding down parts of Europe, US exports could continue to lag.

"The economy has less momentum going into 2013 than initially thought, making it vulnerable to external shocks," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group.
Economists failed to predict the most recent contraction and if the economy continues to decline, then they will have also failed to predict the next US recession.

With worldly experiences such as your I would think you would be thanking god for even being born in to this great country of ours. To do any less is either complete ignorance or blasphemy.

Hi, all! Your right stockpicker it is the best country in the world but people not standing up to lawmakers will lead to complete control....most people are expressing concerns here. I worry as well! We lose so many right per year it's astounding...last check it was around 200per year new laws in this country, we're building a prison system here and two classes of people one class filthy rich and one class very poor, and the very rich keep taking from the poor, even worse they outsource our manufacturing jobs so they can even profit more....then some have the gall to say we have no reason to be upset!! The people in Washington don't have a clue...they have been over paid for years Ross Perot is the only one that offered to do it for free! Had he not had an itchy trigger finger I would have voted for him in that election. Gun control of any kind is wrong and a lot of the new laws are wrong but turning your head in dis belief isn't going to help anything...sometimes you have to take up someone else's fight if for no other reason, it might be the right thing to do, all the bickering we do in this country isn't going to help a thing but talking about it might JMHO

You keep preaching to the choir about thanking god for living here (We get it) But what about all those kids who live with no father some who have up to 20 brothers sired by the offspring off the Johnson administration And they look at you and say what's so great about it?

Donb- I agree with you on many points. I have absolutely no problem with folks voices dissenting opinions from the government. The population being politically active is what makes our great system work. What most of us have a problem with is the extremist rhetoric and hyperbole that is thrown around on this site. Obama and of bush are not the antichrist, the world is not coming to an end, we are not all being send to the FEMA camps. Do we need action on the debt and deficit - definitely. Do I agree with all laws being passed - of course not. Do I appreciate being called a "fat cat banker" by the democrats - of course not.

Lets have an intelligent conversation on real problems that have real solutions. Lets stat in reality and not the world of cast conspiracies and end of world talk.

And again I always like to point out that my liberal friends thought bush was the antichrist and the world was coming to an end under him. Obviously they survived the bush administration and life goes on. And before you know it another loser will be in office and if he's a republican you will think he does no wrong or another democrat and it can be "king what's his name" all over again. It's funny that folks have such a short memory and have zero empathetic abilities. Best.

Have a new angle you are trying on, stocky? Trying to get people to believe that it is American duty to be socialist?

Yes, you try to be a chameleon. Good luck.

It is painfully obvious that you know and are scared to to tell us your allegiance.

Tell me. Did you get fired, and are now so upset that you are railing against free markets to anyone you can? You post on every single thread about how we either need government controls or we need to curb business. And the new bent is that it is American Yankee doodle to believe in the socialist tendancies you espouse.

I tell you what. You tell us what it means to you. I am not sure you grasp it.

I am proud to be an American, I am also a vet, I have served my country during time of war, I have been under fire, I have family serving in the military for 4 generations that I know of, that does not mean I condone the course this country is headed nor the policies of the current adminstration and its attacks on our freedoms. I will not standby while our Bill of Rights and freedoms are attacked .........
