i decided to hunt the ruins of an old sawmill that i found out about through research and it payed off big! i believe i found a conneticutt copper from 1788! the condition is not very good,in fact i couldnt hardly read any features at all untill an olive oil soak took some of the black crud off of it.the really interesting thing is it seems to be struck twice with the printing around the rim of the coin appearing again over the portrait in the center of the coin. this is both on the obverse and the reverse. i took it to a coin store to have it id`d but the guy told me to soak it and then bring it back fri for his father to see. was it common for colonial coins to be mistruck in this manner? could it be worth something? even if its not worth a ton i still think its great! believe me when i tell ya that research is key and location is everything!! ;D

wilmington is just 30 min away from center city philadelphia. thats a good idea! maybe i should bring it into philly to have it looked at........ im quite sure it is real!the thing im worried about is the condition.its pretty rough.unless you look closely at this thing, it looks like a copper slug.there is some visable detail, you just have to look close. the site where i found it is nothing more than a pile of uninteresting stones now! if you were not looking hard for this place you would walk right past it.(i did walk right past it a few times and i was looking for it!) the only way i became aware of this site was by accident. i stumbled across a proposal to make a nearby road an historic route and they mentioned this site in the proposal. it was near my house so i checked it out.

Hollow you can get it graded over the internet. I think i still got the guys email. They graded my gold coin for free at no cost.?

free........did you have to send the dehlonga off, or did you send them a photo of the coin? i guess i should do a search for coin apprasials on google. if you still have that guys e-mail shoot me a pm. i would be interested in seeing what they have to say......thanks for the idea.

HAHAHAHA!! aint that the truth!!! ..........im afraid i need more than a camera.............my whole computer setup is a friggin wreck! its amazing i can post anything at all!!

i have a question for you guys about this olive oil soak. will a good long soak in the oil really make a differance or is this just a bunch of bunk? the coin guy said it would take months or even years in the oil to help.can i really expect a change in the coins appearance?

Hollow the one i contacted is Heritage Galleries and Aucioneers, look that up just tell them what you found. I sent photos after they expressed interest. as for olive oil it takes a long time. Post your self a topic on olive oil and the details on how to clean it. Some use a tooth pick also with that method. I've soaked mine and never seen any difference.

HOLLOW

DONT EVER LET THE COIN OUT OF YOUR SIGHT OR POSSESION FOR ONE SECOND WITH ANYONE YOU DONT KNOW ORTRUST!
MANY COIN SHOP GUYS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO PULL THE OLD SWITCHAROO WHEN THEY SAY THEY HAVE TO TAKE IT INTO THE BACK FOR A SECOND TO EXAMINE IT MORE CLOSELY. IF THIS IS THE REAL M'COY, I WOULDN'T PUT IT PAST ANY OF 'EM TO TRY SOMETHING.
HOPE IT IS THE REAL DEAL. US GUYS NEED TO COME UP BIG SOMETIMES TOO!
KEEP THE FAITH.

Well, ?I found your coin in the 2006 Official Red Book, Guide to United States Coins by Yeoman. ?It is on page 60 of the ring bound book. ?It seems to be a 1788 Mailed Bust Facing Right. ?According to the book, it is worth $45 in Good condition. ?It doesn't say anything about overstrikes, however. ?It does state that "The Connecticut coppers, especially those dated 1787 and 1788, were usually crudely struck and on imperfect planchets.". ?Hope this helps. ?HH

thank you everyone for your research and help. i am quite sure that it is a conn copper. when it first comes out of the oil you can see some more detail (when the coin is moist with the oil), and all the words and images are the same. the guy at the second coin store told me to stop back next fri. hopefully the guy that knows agout colonial coins will be there then. i will stop back and update this thread with any future info. thanks again everyone!

As a hero member, why don't you have a camera to show us your finds?

sorry dixie,i know it is frustrating to not be able to see a picture of it.no one is more frustrated than me. actually there are a bunch of things i would like to post pictures of, but due to a lack of memory on my antiquated computer, i cant even run a scanner on my setup right now let alone load digital pictures. maybe i can borrow a scanner or have someone scan a picture of it for me. i know you all want to see it. i only hope that some detail will show up on film.......i can try, bear with me, it could take a few days.

HP, sorry about suggesting that store with the as_ _ _ _ _ clerk. Let it soak in the olive oil for a few weeks, and see how it does. I'm really hoping that it turns out to be one of the rare versions, and that it's worth a good amount. Bad shape or not, it's a fantastic piece of history, and it's all yours!! Good luck!!

its not so much that he was an a-----le, its just that he was in such a hurry it was as if he had made up his mind that it wasnt a conn copper as soon as i told him i found it. i do appereciate the help!

zeb....i like the new avatar!! ;D

CONGRATS!! What an awesome find!! HH!!
