i decided to hunt the ruins of an old sawmill that i found out about through research and it payed off big! i believe i found a conneticutt copper from 1788! the condition is not very good,in fact i couldnt hardly read any features at all untill an olive oil soak took some of the black crud off of it.the really interesting thing is it seems to be struck twice with the printing around the rim of the coin appearing again over the portrait in the center of the coin. this is both on the obverse and the reverse. i took it to a coin store to have it id`d but the guy told me to soak it and then bring it back fri for his father to see. was it common for colonial coins to be mistruck in this manner? could it be worth something? even if its not worth a ton i still think its great! believe me when i tell ya that research is key and location is everything!! ;D

Great find, Red!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am REALLY looking forward to seeing a pic of the actual coin.

I would have died on the spot if I'd dug something like that.

Re: scored big over the weekend!!

no free it nearly blew my ears off and was as solid a dime signal as you will ever see. it was right next to the remnants of an old stone wall, very close to a creek bed. it was shallow, only three inches down under the soil with a thick layer of fallen leaves over that. it did id as a dime though even though the size is much closer to a half. it is thin so the mass must have confused the ace.

Re: scored big over the weekend!!

thanks again everyone! once again this website has proven to be full of the most knowledgeable and helpfull members in the world!! i cant thank you guys enough for the helpfull links and the avice. ;) i will be bringing the coin to a colonial coin specialist in my area (thanks to treasurekid!) this weekend, and i will check back with the info they tell me then. im not gonna get my hopes up just yet cause as i said, the condition is kinda rough. the soil in this area of the country is really hard on copper coins. even if its not worth a lot of money, i still consider myself really lucky to find this coin and a half reale in just a couple of months. this hobby just keeps getting better and better! ;D...........ill check back when i have some new info.

Re: scored big over the weekend!!

well i went to the coin store that has the colonial coin expert today. he seemed to be in such a hurry, he didnt even hardly look at it. at first glance he said, " no thats too big to be a conn. copper. see here is a genuine one." and held it up against one he had in stock. then he said " well i guess the size isnt that off but i think its an american coin." (isnt conn. in america?) ::) then he proceeded to tell me it was probably a large cent. i said " what about the date of 1788? and he said "it has a date on it?" then he looked and saw the date and said "uh........well soak it in olive oil for a few months." i asked if it would have any value and he said" maybe". what a big help he was. >:( if you look hard at it you can definatly see some details. the other coin store was no help either because the same guy that didnt know anything about coins was working tonight as well >:( . i guess trying to find someone that actually wants to help is going to be a chore. i guess i will continue to bring it around to some more stores. hopefully i will find one where the guy will actually look at it. :-\

Wish ya the best of luck Red! Keep bothering people with that coin and sooner or later you'll turn someone up who knows what the heck they're doing!

Hope it turns out to be a good one! No reason why it shouldn't!!!

Congrats buddy!

Hey HP. No matter what the coin dummy says, it's a great find. Watch the local paper & see if there are any coin shows in your area, or keep searching the net.

HEY HOLLOW

DONT TRUST ANYONE OF THOSE COINSHOP GUYS THEY ALL LIE!
I KNOW A FEW OF THEM AND THEY ALL HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY ALWAYS TRY TO DOWNPLAY THE VALUE OF SOMEONES COIN IN ORDER TO GET YOU TO SAY "WELL WHAT IS THIS WORTH?" AND THEN THEY NEVER REALLY ANSWER AT FIRST BUT WILL SAY "WELL I COULD GIVE YOU THIS MUCH FOR IT." BEWARE THIS IS HOW THEY EARN A LIVING. THEY HAVE TO BUY LOW IN ORDER TO SELL HIGH.
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND SELL IT ON EBAY!
YOU WILL DO OK THERE.

thanks for the advice and words of encouragement.the only thing that the coin guy and myself could agree on is that it is an overstrike. im sure that its a conn copper. all of the wording matches up where it should be and you can see traces of the seated liberty on the back. as well as a clear 1788 date. (all you have to do is look closely!) hopefully a few months in an olive oil soak will improve some of the features. im still going to seek some help. does any one know online where to find the value of colonial coins .......or even what an overstruck 1788 conn copper in AG condition would be appoximatly worth? ;D

google search the words conn copper and the date, there has to be a webbased coin club that can help you, borrow a scanner and get some nice clear pics.

Hollow you can get it graded over the internet. I think i still got the guys email. They graded my gold coin for free at no cost.
