Metal Detecting
I got out woods hunting this after noon and started a new area on the side of a hill.
It wasn't long and I got a 75 reading on the DFX and I'm thinking silver.
I started digging and I see leather so I widen the hole to be carefull.
The leather was two inches down and the lowest point of the leather was six inches.
I pulled at the leather pouch and it came out and the coins slide out on the dirt
and that's when I seen two gold coins laying on top of each other.
Man I finaly got gold and wasn't sure what they were untill I got home right after I showed MPfish
My neighbor and detecting friend. He keep puting one in his pocket and I was saying don't rub them.
They both are 1914-s Saint-Gaudens,Twenty.Dollar gold. There is writing on the edge
e plu.ri.bus u.num. "Latin. One out of many. The motto of the U.S." and 13 stars.
Yes i'm very happy . It's my first and second gold coins ever. I have pounded that place many a day and a lot of days I came home with nothing.
I'll try to borrow mikes camera with macro setting to get better pic's since my camera is only for general picture takeing. I hope you all can experiance the finding of a gold coin or two.

Congrats on the find of a lifetime !

Two buckles on the leather.............Suggests a larger bag - maybe a saddlebag........... If so, I would be searching the area even more with your gain cranked because only two coins in such a relatively large bag would be kind of odd................ Might be somebody buried the bag along with two missed coins seperate from its contents.............. if so I would expect the rest to be buried deeper..........

Diggem'

Exactly what I was thinking!!!!!!!!
Thanks tapoutking. I checked it out and nothing left that I can tell but I'll give it another going over soon.

How cool is this? Congratulations on that find! I just voted for Banner
Thanks 4-H staff.

AWESOME DUDE! I would sell one and buy a good camera with a macro setting, and also buy some good glasses ;D. BTW, one of our club members also just found 2 1928 Saint Gaudens 20's. They were found in one of Detroit's oldest parks, in an area of the park affectionately called " robber's roost " a very dangerous park to hunt alone. Check them out at http://www.greatlakesmetaldetecting.com see Sharon's find..........NGE

Good eye.... Now that you mention it, it looks like a double strike to me, too.

Hey, is it me, or is that 1914 a double-die? I see distinct doubling on that date.
Thanks Rasputin. Thats what hoover-jr had told me after he took the pictures. Double-die.

Great finds, gold is always nice. Makes you think about the guy who lost the pouch, maybe on a horse
and when he discovered it gone went back and looked for it for a long time. That was pretty good money
back then. Maybe it fell into a bush or shrubs back then and he could not find it (no metal detector either!)

great finds........seems like vdi of 75 wouldn't be right though seems like it would be lower........maybe cause they were stuck together??

Gold reads high when you find a big chunk of it.

This guy found two 20s.

I found a 14K ring once that read a solid 60-64.
Thanks plehbah. I have checked out 5 or 6 gold rings and got a wide
range of numbers. A good tone and the bar hit the top. The 22 kt ring came
up in the 70. The gold coins were on edge and came up in the 70 to 75.
You will find that the bar graph don't always come up in the center but also
comes up to the far right. A five dollar gold will read 51.

I know I said this before so I hereby revoke that prior post wherever it is. That's the coolest find I've heard of - not just the coins, but the whole old leather pouch thing. Reminds of me "Golden Axe" or "Ultima Online" or something like that.

Heavy Sigh! I'm still wrestling with my xTerra. Seems I am only just figuring out how it reacts to things and even at modest depths. And then I see incredible posts like yours! While I'm green with envy :alien: it at least lifts me to nkow there's still something out there waiting for me, just ogtta be in the right place, and at the right settings! Congrats (if there aren't enough of them) on a wonderful find. Glad to know you're keeping them and not selling.
