I have been using this scoop for over 3 years. I am not sure of the exact RTG model, but it has worked well. I definitely do not baby it, and probably am a little bit rough with it. I had hit a target and began to scoop and felt resistance, and pried a little too much…..turns out the target was a buried metal pole/stake, probably for an umbrella, and my RTG broke.

Luckily I had bought two when I bought this one. I use this scoop 80% in the sand, 10% in the wet and 10% in the water

Was it a stainless steel scoop that broke? Just curious as that's the one that I have!
It looks like it broke above the weld or right at it and I'm thinking that RTG will stand behind it!
Best of luck!

I think it is stainless with galvanized coating. I wish I got one with the grab handle. I plan to do more water hunting and perhaps a slightly bigger basket, with grab handle, would do better in the water. The RTG scoops are not warrantied 3+ years, and honestly I don't think its a defect, I think I just abUSED it too much………..would buy again, it served me well. I may even be able to get by with an aluminum scoop, would save a lot of weight. I saw people talk of the RTG scoops that were aluminum but had a stainless lip, I could not find those on their site. They are not too far from my house and I may stop by there sometime to browse their stock.

Thanks Signal! I think Fletch88 had one with a handle that broke right at the assist handle. Anyways I went to sunspot scoops and ordered a new 720i scoop with a carbon shaft handle so I hoping it's lightweight and can dig that packed wet sand and heavy shelled shallow water a little better than my Stavr and RTG scoops.
I find the Stavr too wide if I have to dig deep and the RTG too small!
Best of Luck!

That looks like a galvanized scoop Signal. A SS scoop wouldn't rust and oxidize like that one. If you take your scoop to RTG they might rivet a SS tip on it while you wait. You could call Larraine and set it up.

That doesn't look like any RTG scoop Ive ever seen.

Now here's a fellow with some morals. So many times I read posts about a product and how something mysteriously happened to it.

My first scoop. Didn't last very long. 3 months maybe.

You didn't break it, you transformed it into a "travel-scoop" !!! All you need is a slightly smaller pipe to fit in between the two-halves and "wha-lah"!!! It's as good as $159 or best offer LoL

call rtg, they have great customer service and make very good scoops, they might help you out! that model was not meant for heavy digging, prying, wet sand......... as you have found out!

chuck.

Ok, my scoop was just galvanized as pointed out, not SS. If I ever need another scoop I will look into the SS ones. I am going to keep my broken scoop just in case one day I swing by RTG and they can rework it with a new handle for less than it would cost for a new one.

...they can rework it with a new handle for less than it would cost for a new one.

Usually $20 +/- from most boat-fab shops. They often just charge labor to weld a piece from their recycle pile.

MY RTG IS AIRCRAFT ALUMINUM - THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO MINE

Ive already stuck my foot in my mouth on this thread but isn't that an aluminum scoop, not SS?

Damn, tough crowd, lol. It is the 6".

Those are funny.....

Stainless steel.

I think he said Aluminum because the welds are wide like aluminum, SS welds most of the time are small and narrow, an easy mistake.
