Rifle Butt Plate?? No...piece of harmonica!

My dad found this plate today at an old foundation dating to the mid-1800's to 1920's.? ?It's 4 3/4 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide.? The tabs were folded down around something and there is a slight curve to the long side.? Any ideas what it might be?? My dad thinks it might be from a gun.
