Dad & I went looking for any grassland that might be available. We got lucky, as a small area of our 2nd Fav Field which the farmer had turned to grass/hay was available. We were very disappointed he had done this to a 3 acre strip as it meant no more ploughing up of good finds. However, today we were glad he did it, as in June we have nothing, & this recently cut hay, which he cut early & green for silage, was perfect hunting ground!

Only cover 1/4 of the area & got the following:

Livery Button
Lead Pilgrims Ampulla from the Holy Shrine of Walsingham - Excellent find :icon_thumright:
Our first Medieval Dagger Quillion
Medieval dagger chape with blade still in it!
Medieval casket Key
4 Scrappies
Early Jetton
3 Lead Tokens
3 Rose Farthings (1620s)

One of the best Medieval Seal Matrix I have ever found :icon_thumright: I have had 3 excellent examples this year & all different types, the other two were; Lead oval type, & Bronze 'chess' type.
This one is complete with loop on the reverse :headbang:

Guess where we will be tomorrow :laughing7:

I'm sorry that I don't know much, if any about the stuff that you find over there, but it looks to me like you had a great hunt.

Nice seal Cru, what's the inscription is it a personal seal ?. It looks in good condition, whats it's diameter. Is it completely flat on the back, or is there a ridge ?. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Its says Seal of (can't work out first name looks like PAVLINID) SAHAM

about 23mm, its flat with a loop on the back.

UPDATED:

Just got this info back on the seal from a contact of mine:

'Nice find, these round ones are fairly early, may be mid 13th - late 14th. This is a personal seal with the owners name around it. I think all bronze seals are 'fairly' high status so this was probably owned by a merchant or the like.'

So I was way off with my mid-14th century assumption & I thought it may have been more high status than a merchants. But a successful merchant in the 1200s or 1300s in our area was a high flyer, as our villiage was only chartered in the early 1200s. (assuming they lived locally which of course maybe untrue, as it was a busy trading place) :icon_thumright:

now that looks like a proper "crusader post"
Thanks, as you know this time of year we should be getting next to nothing, so this cut grass was a nice surprise 8)
i take it you won't be wanting dinner then :laughing9:
You could have come up here & helped us, but I thought you had something planned for Sunday?
no, just the usual :-\
And what is that 'usual' for you Shaun?

Yes Cru, a very nice seal! Darn old too....What is that on the 2nd photo on top (Wings?). Looks modern.
Your lead tokens are driving me crazy, have found so few of them in all my years searching there, and you find one or two every time you go out.
The casket key is another great find! And of course also the Lead Pilgrims Ampulla, you don't find those every day either.
2nd Fav Field? Is that the one I know?

And the very best thing is that you are continually increasing the very important button count! (that's why I think it must be the 2nd Fav that I know)...

I guess that I am beginning to understand now what the smilies are for! They give a little tone, as you say, to the message. You can see better when someone is kidding you or just being mean! Greetings!

Above is the day we had we Shaun, we still have a few hours to finish it.

RAF Badge missing its crown on top (Silver) - 1930-40s.
Yes this is the grass which boarder the field we started on, its about 4-5 acres.

PS. Lead Ampulla are rare, I have had only 2 & 1/2 & this is Dads first in over 10 years!

Another great hunt Crusader
You find the neatest stuff.
