I decided this week to do the same thing as last week, where I hunted my old homesite for a while then headed to the beach for a bit after that.

The old homesite continues to turn up plenty of metallic objects, mostly stove parts, desk parts, nails, and shotgun brass. I am stymied by the fact that after four hunts at this site, I have yet to find a single coin. I am spurned on by the fact that most of this stuff was dug in a relatively small area around the homesite--most of the area is unhuntable until spring due to vegetation, and I have therefore only hunted about 1/3 of the area, if that. I also hunted for about an hour after hunting the homesite looking for the 1850s gathering spot I keep talking about, but have yet to find. I have a huge area to cover, but it is out there somewhere and I am going to find it. (and dig up at least one large cent LOL)

Here are the finds for the first site:

After that I went to the beach for about 2 hours to 'wind down'.  Still no gold or silver from this beach, but a few more cents in change this time than last time:

The same thing happened to me this past winter. I hunted a 3 story resort that drew people from several states. It was spread out over many acres so I too covered only a small percentage, but still not one coin. I got the same type stove parts etc. I did manage a couple large serving spoons (plated). I'll attach a drawing of it.

Keep after that penny! It's there.

MXTswinger: Isn't that strange? How could there be people around like that and none of them drop coins?! In my case, clearly I am the first person to hunt this site--this iron was all over everywhere, and many of the signals overlapped. Also there are all these shotgun shells that they would have dug if they were trying to only find good signals. Nope--it hasn't been hunted before. I'll have to just keep looking!

In any case the real goal is to find the gathering spot, not just this one homesite.

Thanks CC! I'm not sure what some of those are either lol! Most are desk and stove parts, with some other 'thingies' thrown in. The shotgun shells, while rather old, are actually newer than the iron stuff I am digging. That homesite dates from 1850 - 1870 or so, from what I can tell plus the history of the area and the age of the desk and the stove.

Cool! Maybe you will find some old coins there if you keep hunting.

That is the thought that drives me to keep going back! ;D

Next spring should really be good, when I'm not fighting 7-foot tall parsnips, 2-foot tall grass, and a bumble-bee nest. (they weren't too fond of my intrusion into their turf--although we did manage a truce)

Keep at it, Matt. You'll find the coins! In the mean time, you might want to consider some bottlecap artwork.

MLW,
now that is one fine bottle top collection ;)

Keep at it, the gold and silver will come.

have a good un............

We have a site like the one you are digging iorn. You just have to keep working it - break it up - go back for an hour or two every other week. I think you will have success. It's just what price are you willing to pay. If you have better prospects then the place can wait. It just when the places have the big potential - like that place - you have to keep going back.

Bottle caps? I never use to be able to tell those apart from a zinc penny with my Quattro. With the Exp II they are easy to identify.

Your gold ring is just another outing away...

LOL @ your pictures, Lisa! Is that Queen Amidala on the horse? The hair looks familiar....

Thanks for the great comments and kudos, Bdoo, Sherman, and Mirage!!

I've got LOTS of ground left to cover in looking for that old gathering spot, so I'm not giving up.

On the beach I think I'm going to stop digging the bottle caps. I originally started hunting there with a 'dig it all' attitude, but like Mirage said the bottle caps show as zinc pennies (using a White's Classic IDX). I think I will pass on the 4 or 5 cents I made digging those caps and just dig the high and low end signals. The zincers and bottle caps can stay there!
