I am basically a coin/jewelery hunter--however I will be visiting the Outer Banks in January and would like to also hunt for iron spikes, nails...etc from shipwrecks. My feeling was to open the screen ( I use an e-trac) and go for it and dig everything. The beach area that I will be hunting is not a high traffic area for tourists so minimal junk should be encountered ( at least that is what I am hoping ). Is this the right approach? I will be using a 15x12 SEF coil.

Yes, that's a good plan to start out. But once you find a hot spot you should use discrimination for a while just too see if you come up with any non iron items. Low disc. will only cut out the smaller iron so even while you search in disc. you can still dig iron. I personally would run low disc. the entire time because I'd rather one very old silver coin than a bucket of iron, assuming the bucket of iron is the typical stuff. Finding iron goes with the territory anyway so why not look for a real score.

I suggest open screen in ferrous and audio 1,with audio 1-in etrac smooth? you will hear better what is the object size, plus in ferrous without discrimination you still will get big iron like horseshoe from front of the unlucky ship wreck :laughing7: at least I can get on my explorer. but with little discrimination in conductive its good too again bigger iron will spit in the headphones. good luck Stasys
