Today I needed a good "think walk". So, I went back to my favorite place to hunt, the old mansion.

The finds are getting further and further between but just being there does my heart good. Just imagine, when you stand up from that last piece of can-slaw you carefully dug. You look around and it's like you've been transported back in time. A huge mansion, giant trees, large expansive green lawns! Somehow it just makes one feel so much better! But, I digress. ;)

There were only two coins today but that was fairly expected. Still, I completely enjoyed my walk and the place never fails to be interesting to me. Here's the relics, feel free to comment if you recognize any of them.

Hand forged?

2014 (785).jpg
A prototype barrel for the "shoot around a corner" gun

:dontknow:

2014 (793).jpg2014 (795).jpg
188?

2014 (796).jpg

Either lead or pewter.

2014 (797).jpg

The back.

2014 (799).jpg

Then, there was this piece.

2014 (800).jpg2014 (801).jpg

Dimpled on one end.

2014 (802).jpg

Hammer? Handle to a bullet remover? Faucet? Gas Valve? :dontknow:

2014 (803).jpg

Then the piece de resistance. This one was a funny dig!
I happened to get down to where I could see the ring, and the gold, then of course
I slowed down to savor the moment. Looked like any other gold ring I'd found before.
I could easily see the rim just above the dirt in the bottom of the hole. I went to take
some pics and, no battery. :(

So, I reached in, figuring to just flick the ring into the open with my finger and it wouldn't budge.

:icon_scratch:

I gently pulled and it took more than I expected to get it to start moving! As it uncovered I said,
"Is this a pipe!!!? "

Finally, it pulled free! I just couldn't believe it! LOL

Like I said, this place is ALWAYS interesting! :)

Of course, Blingie is in over his head again. ;)

Thanks for peeking!

Interesting finds! Metal detecting is good therapy. You get into your own world, and forget everything else for a while.

Some places are just like that. I have a few spots that are hard to resist but I like being there Is the second piece off of some musical equipment like a horn maybe? Good day and I bet you go back again. That copper pipe looks brand new.

To be sure, I will be going back.

The 2nd piece? It is SOLIDLY constructed and a fairly heavy piece of brass/bronze pipe or some such. If it had been straight, I would have suspected a barrel.

The new "copper pipe"? It's tested good for 10kt. Did they make napkin rings that small? Or did someone just create something for themselves? :icon_scratch:

Nice finds, Even After Hitting that place alot u still pull the goods out.

Nice saves!

Nice assortment. Like the gold band, but who doesn't like gold?

Very nice finds, my friend.

That tap handle looks old. (the fact that it's broken off makes me pretty sure it's a tap handle).

And of course that gold band is awesome.

One end appears slightly larger than the other on your " tap handle/ball peen hammer " item. Maybe it's an optical illusion in the picture. Hard to believe you're finding such large items after you've said so many times that finds are getting far and few between isn't it? In the ring pics, I thought it looked copper and thought it was a " slip " coupling used by plumbers in repair work.

Nice hunt, Indians and gold, sweet. I thought it was a copper coupling?

Very nice writeup and pictorial, Whadifind. Thank you!

That gold band, if old, could be a kerchief slide maybe?

Good posting there W. ! I like the Kerchief slide theory also, congrats on finding it !! Some interesting relics also =)

Thanks for all the comments folks. The ring was highly suspect to me also. I tested at 10kt but I didn't trust my own abilities. Like you guys, I just couldn't get my mind around just WHAT this thing was intended to be. I took it to a jeweler and he said it's actually 9kt, possibly homemade. But, even he wasn't sure what it's intended purpose might've been.

He mentioned a kerchief slide, a ring for a pretty slender finger, maybe, even some sort of dining decoration.

Anyhoo, the exact why is nice to have but lacking that, just seeing it proudly displayed is plenty enough for me! LOL

Thanks again!

Yeah, the "tap handle" is a puzzler. It seems pretty small to be for a water faucet. It is a VERY solid piece of brass/bronze and pretty heavy for it's size. Both ends are approximately 1/2 inch wide. It does appear to be a handle to a tap or maybe even something like a jeweler's hammer of some sort. I thought maybe a handle to something that removes bullets but it seems too heavy for that. :dontknow:

About the "still finding pieces" and large ones? Well, each time I go back I'm a little more experienced and a bit smarter about where to look. It took me a full 5 1/2 hours to find all that this time. I concentrated on spots not easily hunted. Under trees with low limbs, bushes, shrubs, etc. Also, I know quite a bit more about hearing things in between the iron now. Also, occasional changes to the landscaping helps.

I've heard that no place can be hunted out. Well, unless someone takes about a mile of topsoil off, I sort of agree. At least, that is, until there's nothing left to find. Then, yeah, it's hunted out. ;)

Remember though, I am first and foremost, a coinshooter. It's what I love to find. So, 2 coins? In 5 1/2 hours? Yeah, that's pretty far between. 1961 & 188? also, pretty far apart! LOL

Thanks again guys!

Sometimes one just has to let go of what they see in front of themselves and try to see what it might've looked like 100-200 years ago. Be surprised how it changes one's perspective. ;)

You always find some interesting things on your "walks" WAF. HH, Q.

Yeah, Quindy, strangeness really does seem to follow me around. LOL I think, I kind of like it though. :)

Even that short piece of pipe has a weirdness to it, it seems very heavy for it's size. Solid bronze I think, weighs in at almost a 1/2 pound! If it were straight, I'd suspect a gun barrel of some sort. :dontknow:

Thanks!
