We had a once in a lifetime experience here overnight. Yesterday a young red tailed hawk crashed into our front window and knocked itself silly. It was on its back, not moving. But it was breathing. So we were hopeful. We looked online for what to do and the wisdom was to carefully put the bird in a box and leave it alone and wait. So we did. First time in my life I've ever held a hawk in my hands.

He wasn't really able to move and didn't try to scratch or anything. He wasn't breathing very well and we weren't sure he would make it. When it got dark we took him into the plant shed so he would be safe overnight. This morning we went to check on him and he had righted himself and was sleeping with his head tucked under his wing.

After a while we thought he should be back outside, so I gently picked his box up and brought it outside. The rest speaks for itself. Absolutely incredible experience. Some people see "just a bird", but I felt like we had been visited by royalty or something.

What happened in this case ? ? ?
I remember the picture.
Not sure if you are aware... and perhaps you are...... maybe even "allowed / permitted" due to something i don't know about you.
BUt.... i do know.....
Even looking at an Eagle the wrong way ... let alone touching one...
Can be a serious offense.
They are so protected that even picking up a Eagle feather from the ground is an offense.
UNLESS>....
You are a permitted Native American Indian.... from what i have heard anyway.

An update to this story:

For the rest of the summer, I'd hear the hawk occasionally but not see it. It was usually far out in the field someplace. As fall approached, I would hear it more often up close to the house and shop, but still didn't see it much. Then I started hearing a second hawk, and there would frequently be one near the shop calling to one back in the woods across the field (maybe a breeding pair?). They camouflage very well, because even when I could hear it and know it was right there somewhere, I still couldn't see it. Well yesterday one of our cameras happened to catch him as he stopped to rest for a sec. I don't know that this is the rescued hawk, but I sure like to think it is.

That's really cool to have them around.
We have a pair that often call, hunt around the berry patch and field.

This past summer they had a nest on the cliff across the bay from our dock.

The loud cries(screeching) from the young ones was amazing. They'd start as soon as one of the parents flew over the open water.

WHat about putting a small red zip tie on its leg next time and not to tight or long ? for identification ?

I would be concerned about a zip tie, but if I had a bird band (one made for chickens would be about right), then, maybe. But at least as far as him flying into windows, I hope there isn't a next time. :icon_thumright:

Yes I was just trying to mark one with out endangering it
