I finally got out on tuesday for the third hunt of the year. Just been a waiting game before snowstorms and enough heat to melt the snow. So I walked a mile or two of my favorite creek bank and found a few artifacts. I got a couple in situs along the way. Besides some points, blades, and tools I found a worked piece of greenish slate. Thanks for stopping by and HH folks.

Here's the slate piece. I'm thinking the chips out of the side is damage and not intentional? It's polished and has alot of use wear and grinding marks. It appears to be worked to a blunt tip but I think it would be thin to be a celt. I'd be interested in hearing any opinions on this piece.

Nice finds. Don't know what to say about the slate piece, maybe a specialized hammer stone with all the abuse on it. It would have made a cool looking celt. Thanks for the view.

Really nice archaic/Artifacts?! They were using the black material a lot. Looks like you had a great day. Thanks for the post/pics.

Thanks man, from the heavy usewear it does look they were hammering or grinding with it. Have a good one.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah the black chert in this area seemed to be the material of choice for the archaic guys. HH

You had a really good day. Great pictures and insitu's as always. Looks like you are well on your way to another banner year. When you say slate is that what I call green stone? I think they incised some areas and then polished it down. What I see on some of mine anyways
Thanks for sharing your hunts thirty7. I owe ya one ..ok, maybe a bunch !! :laughing7:

Thanks buddy, yeah you owe me a few, lol, I'm always interested in seeing some sweet Tn. artifacts. Most of the slate in this area is greyish to black. I may be wrong in calling it slate but the way it has chipped away in thin layers and feels I believe it's slate, maybe the green is patina? Greenstone is also called greenschist which imo is a more accurate description because there are many types of green stone. It comes from basalt. Greenstone also forms in layers but it's has a much different composition than finer grained slate varieties imo. Here's a couple pieces of Va. greenstone, the second pic is a broken axe that shows the schistlike structure of the stone. Va and Tn greenstone is nearly identical imo and often develops a dark patina but when wet you can usually see the greenish color of the stone. This is all just my opinion I have alot to learn about hardstone materials. Appreciate the comments...HH

Nice points 37. The green slate looks like the net wieghts we find here notched on opposite sides. But we are on the bay. Dont know if they were used in creeks.

Thirty7 I know I am slacking on artifacts but have some permission on some Civil War sites and it has taken years to get into these sites so I gotta get it while the getting is good.
Here is some local greenstone. It is a busted celt I found. If I hold it just right it looks good but the other side is shattered. Has the prettiest polish and bit. I have studied this one under high magnification and there are precise incised lines in areas they were polishing and reducing. Last year I found a 1/4 x10 round prefect greenstone platter and thought it was natural cause of the polish and skipped it to deep water. As soon as it left my hand I was regretting.
I do have some semi recent stuff I could post but do not have the insitus : (
Thanks for letting me share on your post.

Thanks for bringing up those notched weights. I've never found one like it down here but the form is very similar. I remember a few months back a member here posted a whole frame of those I think he was from Pa.? I'm gonna hunt down that post. Thanks bsit.

Just joking with ya pilgrim. I can understand why you're concentrating on CW, permission on promising sites doesn't come around often. Thanks for adding some Tn. greenstone. and feel free to add more. That celt has some serious polish...pretty piece of stone. Sounds like you may have tossed a perfectly good platform of platter back in the river. I hope the other side didn't have an ornate design or anything like you see on tablets, etc. In situs or not, who cares...post em up.

Nice looking finds and in situs Ryan. Our snow is finally melting off, but now I have 5 midnights in a row to work and I don't get another day off until Thursday so I doubt I get time to hunt. Damn the bad luck!!

As for the notched piece. We find crude pieces like that here that I was always told were Net Weights. You thinks yours might be one?

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the comments...Spring will be here soon, warmer temps, no snow, longer daylight hours, disced and plowed (hopefully) fields, and all that good stuff, won't be long.

Supposed to be around 50 here tomorrow, I figure I'll take advantage until my back and knees are worn out.

Steve, it could be one of those notched weights, if it is it would be the first I've found. It's pretty thin and not real heavy though. I'm not real sure.

HH everyone.
