I'd like to think that the vast majority of us that are involved enough in this hobby to "discuss" such issues are NOT the offenders. The problem lies with the individual(s) that determined they could score some extra $$$ if they could find some lost gold/silver at their local park/ballfield/beach...Then they cut a trail for Wally World to get themselves a money machine!

They're clueless from the start, & when their shallow 2" x 8-10" holes don't produce the rent money, they quickly lose interest...Both in detecting & in respect for the property of others. They don't CARE if M/Ding is forbidden in parks/schools. They'd wasted their $100 on a POS 'tector & they're P/Od.

Had a 60ish black fellow stop me at a park last week & ask me how much "money" I was finding. I said I probably had the better part of a dollar. He scoffed, said that his out-of-work son had mentioned getting a detector so he could pay his bills. I smiled & said I wished him luck, but he could do much better at MickyD's.

If you replace the words "digging" & "holes" with "recovering", you'll raise fewer eyebrows. Backhoes dig...M/Ders recover.

oh no no no no, we can't have that! Why then the deskbound bureaucrat wouldn't have the full implication of what you're asking about! Heck, I bet what you're saying even violates the md'rs code of ethics, for not being totally forthcoming, truthful, clear, etc....

This is why I have to chuckle when someone proudly comes on a forum, telling how they "got permission" from their city hall, to hunt a school, or park, or whatever (as if permission were needed). Because let's face it: the mere fact they got permission, simply means they didn't ask with the right combination of phrases, words, implications, etc... Heck, go ask if you can "collect city owned riches for your own enjoyment and profit", for example, and see what happens.

Detecting is kinda like nose-picking: just be discreet, and no one notices. But go try to get sanctioned, ask permission, etc... and you will certainly find someone to tell you "no"

I don't know....these things can backfire sometimes. Not sure it's a good idea to point out, or admit to the general public and law makers that you realize your hobby is causing some unsightly damage. And you just know many of them will grab hold of it and twist it around on you like this.

Compass, I applaud your enthusiasm for wanting to promote this great, outdoor activity in a creative, light-hearted manner.
This is one of the few, if not the only outdoor recreational activity (that I am aware of) that participants actively REMOVE trash
and dangerous objects instead of LEAVE it.

During my four years of metal detecting, I have encountered a few irrational, "concerned" citizens while MD'ing public recreation areas.
Even thought I was breaking no laws and was meticulous in leaving no trace of my activity plus, picking up crushed aluminum
cans & broken glass. . . they were beyond reasoning with. No matter what I could have done or said, it was "their" mission to impose
their self-righteous restrictions on my activity. There will always be these types of illogical people out there just itching to "morph"
whatever you say or do into something negative. . . in situations like these, it's best to put on Harry Potter's invisible cloak.
