kuger you dont usually carry a gun with you? ide be carrying a shotgun/rifle over and under and maybe a .357 S&W Magnum

...yes,I do.....the majority of folks dont.My point was,in this state,if it had been ordinary Joe Blow, they would be lynched. As it is I feel for the Warden, because there will be fall out with him as well.....to be completely honest,I would not be surprised if he doesnt lose his job due to the Fact that The Fish and Game Dept. is rolling over to the tree huggers....they recently changed their name to further themselves from the Hunting base of which they are funded by

He appears to be safe in his job as they are considering it justified. A hiker had called 911 the day before because the cat was stalking him.

I too don't understand the money spent on a name change for DFG, along with a few other things they waste revenue on. :dontknow:

I hope they continue to stand behind him,as you know I have close experience with this, and know from the past, that the various "societies",will scream and shout(more so than if he would have shot a human)and he will get grilled to the max,if he as much as sneezes wrong they will be all over him...I guess we will see.

I just heard the Sandhill cranes headin North...spring is here!!!We need rain though

Heard of a camper who was proven "Not Guilty" by a jury for killing and roasting a Golden Eagle..his defense was that he was lost and starving when found by a Search & Rescue Team..Asked how it tasted by a TV Newscaster on the courthouse step, he replied; 'Like a Spotted Owl'...Somewhat like rattlesnake...

What's the point? well, if you're going to do something contrary to the law of the land and get prosecuted, it's no joke.

:icon_scratch:...not sure I am following you...are you saying because it may be against the law you would not kill one if you were attacked?(you are within legal right...as if it should matter...)
I might add that 100's of lions are killed every year under permit of the Dept. of F&G,only difference on this type of deal is its all over the news, and the "kitty lovers",will be claiming lions dont attack people so he didnt need to kill it...even though we know contrary

Oh,and Stefen it was " across between Spotted Owl,and Calif. Condor

Its early for Rattlers to be out but I have already seen two and a Bullsnake in the Pusch Ridge area north of Tucson. During the handgun Javelina hunt of which is in March we have always seen Rattlers out. It's 75 out today.

No I think Kuger means what if a "civilian" shot that lion....there would be Beuracrappic hell to pay for the shooter....I have come across two sidewinders out in the Owens Valley while we were bottle hunting, very cool looking circle in the sand under an overhanging sagebrush bush. looks like someone drew a circle/spiral in the sand...look closer and you can see the little fellers eyebrows sticking out of the sand. they coil up and settle themselves in waiting for a meal...I would consider myself a lesser person had i disturbed and killed such a cool example of natures ways..I have killed several rattlers and it was always only because i had too....and they are not allowed on my property.

Good advice Terry...a lot of them this time of year will strike and bite first, then rattle. :hello:
Yep. April and May are BAD rattlesnake months. Snakes are typically shedding their skin at this time and tend to be alot more aggressive. Before it is shed, the old skin even covers their eyes. The eyes will have a white milky appearance to them. The snake is effectively BLIND and will strike at anything and everything that comes too close. Rattlers can easily strike half their body length. 50% of all rattler bites are non venemous or dry bites, because the snake needs his venom to kill prey and feed. If it's any consolation, a snake that invenomates you, will probably die itself from starvation. Finally. Forget about snakebite kits. They are not practical. If it is a dry bite, you'll only end up mutilating yourself for nothing. Read the instructions and you'll learn you'll need to make as many as THIRTY repeated incisions while your leg turns black and swells up the size of a watermellon. Anyway, you'll probably pass out and die long before you reach the thirty incisions needed to properly drain the wound. Instead, your best bet is a tournaqit and benadryle to help keep your airway open. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL FOR PAIN RELIEF and Get to a hospital ER within the hour. Your odds of surviving a rattlesnake bite are fairly good. NEVER! NEVER! mess with a venemous snake unnecessarily. 90 percent of people bitten, are trying to capture or kill a snake.

Haven't been down there in a few years (OK..like 20..lol) but the area from China Lake down to
the Bernadino Hills and all the way to Southern Arizona tend to hold a critter called a
"Mojave Green".

Mohave Green's may, or may not have rattles, and they tend to be smallish in size
(less than 3'). They like to curl up on a small, green bush or shrub and wait for prey
to come along. Be sure you LOOK as well as LISTEN. I am nearly deaf to so many
sounds that when I'm out there it's "eyes everywhere", as I know I won't hear
them first.

The Green's bite is worse than an average Diamondback, as the venom attacks
both the central nervous system and respiratory functions. If ya do get bit,
walk (no running!) back to your vehicle and have another person drive you to the
closest hospital...IN A HURRY. The quicker you get help, the less the damage will
be from the venom.

A little north of there, up Willow Springs Road is where I have seen the most rattlers in my life. They are loaded up there.

My boas are the same. Not nearly as aggressive, but same principle. They get a little cranky, and they yawn alot trying to get the skin started peeeling. It makes your heart jump alittle when they yawn in your hand. They have some nice fangs. It is actually pretty cool, they rub their heads against your palm trying to get the skin started peeling, like it itches them. Awesome creatures. Rattlers, I have no time for. It is the major reason I carry a pistol with me in the desert. If god could promise I would never get bit, I prob would just leave it in the truck.

Don't get bit by a Mojave Green. Bad news. They posess a neurotoxin as Dizzy noted that attacks the nervous system including the ability to breathe. A 'normal' rattlesnake uses a hemotoxin which causes tissue distruction and disrupts blood clotting. The vaccine provides no protection from a Mojave green. Don't mess this animal- period.

Yes. Rattlesnakes can not only swim underwater, (normally they are spotted swimming on the surface, so everyone assumes they can't swim submerged).. They can also strike underwater. There is a prevailing myth that snakes can not open their mouths underwater. This is a completely erroneous. I've seen snakes swimming submerged in the water with fish in their mouths. How do you think that fish got there ? And why isn't the snake drowning ? Simple. If a snake needs to open its mouth underwater, it does what you would do. Holds its breath and closes its throat and gets on with its business.

....I seen a huge water snake last year with a catfish stuck in its mouth...the fish was too big, they were both dead...I sure wished I had a camera!!

Every year the water on my claim stops running and creates little pools that are full of small fish. Around every pool is a snake or three. They lie around until they are hungry and then just jump in the pool, grab a fish (often under water) and then lie around the pool until they are hungry again. Lots of fun to watch.
