we had an old powder horn like the one on the bottom of the pic of the lower left. I remember my mom saying it came down from her side of the family and she said it was in her house as long as she could remember. I asked her years ago if she still had it and she didn't know. I went through what boxes she had, but could never find it. Back in 1993 Des Moines Iowa where she lived had a big flood and her basement got flooded and soaked boxes in storage. She said a lot of stuff was just tossed away from all the water damage and that's most likely what happened to it as it was in one of the water soaked boxes. It was old and I remember I'd play like I was Daniel Boone on the popular show played by Fess Parker and his side kick Mingo, played by Ed Ames with that thing. It had a fancy lid I think was sterling silver now on it, because I do remember hallmarks on the lid. It's probably buried in a large landfill now.

Reminds me of the time I was at an outdoor concert many moons ago...
People were camped out everywhere...
It started to rain...
Was sitting in vehicle waiting for the rain to stop...
I look out my drivers side window at the car next to mine...
Guy is bent down doing something...
I look closer and see smoke...
He is trying to continue grilling his food...
UNDER HIS FRIGGIN CAR !... THE ASS END !...
I jump out in the rain and begin with "hey man do you see that big box"...
He says yes...
I say... THAT IS YOUR GAS TANK !... are you trying to kill us ?

This location is about 9 miles from the end of the road. The Forest Service built the bridge you see in the right on the picture and I was involved with packing a lot of the stuff into the location. Steel, cement, wheel barrows, cement mixer, everything they needed to build the bridge. The old man at the rear of the mule had forgotten more about packing mules than I ever learned, and he was in charge of packing the cement mixer out. This mule was in a team that pulled a wagon in the movie North to Alaska. The most important thing about packing animals is the load has to be balanced to stay on. You can't tie a rope tight enough to hold an unbalanced load on the animal. So the mule had to pack extra weight on each side for balance, and the mixer had to be dead center on the top. He made it the entire 9 miles without the load slipping.

I just wanted to add that one day when I'd packed sacks of cement into this exact site, and when my string was unloaded I started eating lunch. A rattle snake came out from under neath some empty cement sacks, and I killed it right where the mule is standing. The elevation at that location was about 5,000 feet, and there were lots and lots of rattle snakes.
