Another interesting find Crispin.

I once pulled in a snarl of fishing line with a cheap turquoise ring on it for a weight.
Various hardware has be found attached to other lines and more than one spark plug has gone fishing.
Hard telling what your find was used for. If for fishing a piece of mono leader would help. Or were cordage not so sash weight looking and hinted of being more old, a horse hair leader to hook. But then ocean fish may not all be hook shy...
First guess was a miner high grading and making his/her own bling but coin would be easier and few examples of raw silver in adornment are found in a short look.

Silver coin of little monetary value to the user could certainly have been re-purposed, or as G.I.B. suggests been a form of barter.

This is what makes this site great.
Still a great mystery piece being silver...
Doubt we shall ever know.

Here is a fun fact, the square root of 3 is George Washington's birthday...1.732

Humm, if George had a square root, it explains why Martha walked funny.

Let's go dig up some more history!

If you go back and look at the original in the raw photo you will that some pieces are closer together and then one is farther apart. I'm guessing it was a silver bracelet (possibly made of reals) and that pieces of silver fell off over the years. The place I was hunting is full of old antiques. I've found really odd stuff there. That thing could have been kicking around the sand for 50 years. If you look at the back side on hi-res you can see the outline of where the silver melted around the thread. It was definitely hot when put on. I think it was originally a kind of folk art. We'll all have to get together some time and decide if they are 1/2 Reals or just regular silver...

ROFLMAO!!! May also explain why she moved North to start a Vineyard...keep the old man drunk, heh? When you are done playing fly boy you can trade in your new coin and will let you know where I found it. :)
