Prospecting new 1800‘s home sites, odd brass pieces

Was trying to locate some homesites I researched and was able to pinpoint one. Found these interesting pieces of brass which I was hoping to have some help identifying. Found in two locations, maybe 300 yards apart. They seem to have a pin/hinge (one is partially open you can see) and there is remnants of wood between the brass.

Looks like the hinge to a foldable ruler!

Looks exactly like that, apparently multiple, different sized rulers lost at both sites. Funny how I came across them both in the same day. Thanks!
