thanks,bsit,viking,rock and dlos,
ok was looking for use wear and might be a little at the base end,not sure if they took a big flake there or it broke there but it is pretty sharp.i was thinking a hoe because someone said the piece shown was a hoe,but they do not look the same.with the sharp end i could see it used as a gouge, not sure what they did with a adz.
rock there has got to be good artifacts in ga.river and creek banks are really good spots to look, walk a little stop do a 360 with your eyes, walk and repeat.
dlos getting brownie points isnt a bad way to spend the day but i have found a point froze in the air as it looked when the water pushes all the rocks up on the banks.had to carry it in a chunk of rocks till it thawed out.oh ill get the hoe out and take a picture of it in a second thanks again ya,ll

Yeah there is a lot here just cant dig for them. All surface finds only. Quite a few rules to follow here. I am getting the itch already to go again. I have a artifact close to the one you posted if you would like to see it.

ok the hoe is 3 and1/4 inchesPicture 178.jpgPicture 179.jpg long 1 and 3/4 inches wide

Nice but I believe it is too small for a Hoe. Most Hoes are at least 6 inches and larger. Ill show you one I have like your first one. This one is from a collection out of Tn. I sent you a PM jamey the other day did you get it? An Adz is a wood working tool.

Thanks, I have permission to dig on the farm land but like you where to dig? And that red clay is like a rock. I will probably go there Monday and maybe find a whole one. I really think the 2 are not hoes but wood working tools like Adz. I believe mine is also.

that is a nice one rock, bigger than mine too,im in middle tn were did that one come from in tenn, thanks rock,i did not think it was a hoe just what i was told,i can find them but not very good at what there intensions were.thanks rock

I could show you the collection if you like. Its large and it has some hoes in it with other artifacts. I believe the name of the site where they were found was Valley something. The other person that was with me got all of the paper work on them. I had my pick and he has the rest for sale.

I was going to ask the same thing Rock. Nothing ugly there. I had an ugly day and ugly finds. For real, what I found wasn't worth walking on patches of Ice at 36 degrees. Here it is. Jamey hope you don't mind. I just have to show you how pretty your finds are!!

Rock, you know agricultural tools are a personal favorite of mine. I have studied hoes, spades and axe heads more than any other artifacts. I have quite a few hoes or spades that aren't over 3 inches. I often wander if these smaller spades weren't for children and women. Also, I can't say that I have any spades/hoes as pretty as Jamey's or yours. Most of mine are crude, but have obvious wear.

Most if not all hoes were used by women. The women did the gardens as far as I know. Not to sound like a know it all but all the pictures I have seen it were women in the fields. I have a Adz some place around here I found in the dirt and it is maybe 3 to 4 inches long.

ok i should of said not well made artifacts,im use to the master craftsman, looks like the ones who made these points hit the pipe too much, although i couldnt find it,

You are probably right Rock. Hey bro. if you know something, no need to explain yourself. Drop that knowledge boldly. Lol! I think I'll start a hoe/spade thread. I have some that are just potato or river rocks, that have been pecked on a little bit. They found stones that required minimal work, and used them.

Ok the flint celt....... not a hoe.....to small to serve that purpose, can you imagine digging with that small of a hoe would take you forever. That is why most hoes are 6" and better. Not to mention not even 2 inches in width talk about having to have patience when you dig........................GTP

Rock I did not see your post regarding this celt. Good call man and dead on with your write up!!!
