But the hour is coming and now is, when the power of the leaders of the Rebellion to delude and inflame must cease. There is no bitterness on the part of the masses. The people of the South are not going to wage an eternal war, for the wretched pretext by which this Rebellion is sought to be justified. The bonds that unite us as one people--a substantial community of origin, language, belief, and law, (the four great ties that hold the societies of men together;) common national and political interests; a common history; a common pride in a glorious ancestry; a common interest in this great heritage of blessings; the very geographical features of the country; the mighty rivers that cross the lines of climate and thus facilitate the interchange of natural and industrial products, while the wonder-working arm of the engineer has leveled the mountain-walls which separate the East and West, compelling your own Alleghenies, my Maryland and Pennsylvania friends, to open wide their everlasting doors to the chariot-wheels of traffic and travel; these bonds of union are of perennial force and energy, while the causes of alienation are imaginary, factitious and transient. The heart of the people, North and South, is for the Union. Indications, too plain to be mistaken, announce the fact, both in the East and the West of the States in rebellion. In North Carolina and Arkansas the fatal charm at length is broken. At Raleigh and Little Rock the lips of honest and brave men are unsealed, and an independent press is unlimbering its artillery. When its rifled cannon shall begin to roar, the hosts of treasonable sophistry--the mad delusions of the day--will fly like the Rebel army through the passes of yonder mountain. The weary masses of the people are yearning to see the dear old flag again floating upon their capitols, and they sigh for the return of the peace, prosperity, and happiness, which they enjoyed under a government whose power was felt only in its blessings.
 

God bless the Union; it is dearer to us for the blood of brave men which has been shed in its defence. If I were to recite a speech that was given by someone in one of those schools, and I felt that ADDING the phrase "under God" would be fitting for my audience, would it be totally fair to the intended spirit of that speech or the person that wrote it?
 

You are totally allowed to mention god in public schools, or even pray if you wish to. What is forbidden is for school faculty or admins to lead students in doing so. If a child wants to talk about God or pray, they are totally free to do so.
 

He didn't leave it out. Because there is no one definitive copy of the address, Obama used a copy that did not contain those words.

of course, if you want a reason just go to one of the many web forums that preach separation of church and state. That should explain it.

Bliss Copy

Ever since Lincoln wrote it in 1864, this version has been the most often reproduced, notably on the walls of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. It is named after Colonel Alexander Bliss, stepson of historian George Bancroft. Bancroft asked President Lincoln for a copy to use as a fundraiser for soldiers (see "Bancroft Copy" below). However, because Lincoln wrote on both sides of the paper, the speech could not be reprinted, so Lincoln made another copy at Bliss's request. It is the last known copy written by Lincoln and the only one signed and dated by him. Today it is on display at the Lincoln Room of the White House.

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. Cracks me up all of the immediate protection that some throw out there to explain why the idiot does things. Now I am to believe that odumbo actually thought this through so thoroughly that he wanted to recite the speech without saying God so his version could be used in places where saying God is a big no, no. Pllllllllllllease!!
 

I am simply amazed at how some are acting like this is a big deal, or that Obama has something to defend against here. Our Constitution gives us freedom of speech doesn't it? Does that apply to the President? Lot of hand waving over nothing.
 

UM, did you read where Native F wrote:"Obama's version can be used in public schools where mention of God is a big no no!" ? He seems to be suggesting o-bama omitted God on purpose so his version could be heard in those types of schools. Truth be known, if there were such schools the ENTIRE address would be omitted along with any other speech with traditional values attached.
 

I frankly think the only god he believes in is himself.

Our Constitution doesn't apply to Barry, he does what ever he wants.

This school didn't have any problem with it. "UNDER GOD"

 

the teaparty guy next to me at the library doesn't know about the battle of little rod top...or pickets charge or... any of the critical formation periods in American history...

Maybe PIP you should have asked that TEA Party I personally will rename the famous battle Little ROD top. just to confuse you.
Maybe the shape of a circle you were taught in 6th grade will ring a bell. Not a attack on you but????

Nothing strange at all about it. You keep mistaking the message with the messenger.

I posted my Gettysburg link before NJAL posted this link. I did so because i didn't want this important date to pass unnoticed.

There are two important differences in the threads.

1. My thread includes a wiki link that shows all the copies of the address. Including the one or two that leave out the under God phrase.

2. My thread was posted for the sole purpose of honoring Lincoln. There is no politcal message attached. OTOH, You can look at at NJAL's comment about Obama leaving out the under God and NJAL's references to the Muslim brotherhood and make your own judgement as to why he started this thread.


That said, while i have posted the reasons i was able to find on the net for Obama's use of the copy he read, I personally have no problem with the use of the term under God. I also have no problem with schools or other public entities celebrating Christmas or using the term under God. I have a big problem when God becomes a determining factor in a government run facility. As in the principal of a school being a born again christian thus using his position to proselytize to the students. That doesn't go! past that, let her rip! We sometimes are just a little too PC.
