Post Your best finds That You Thought might have Made banner.

Probably everybody that has posted on here over the years has made a find that they thought might have made the banner, but for one reason or another they slipped by. This is not a thread for complaining it just happens, perhaps the find never received enough votes, or perhaps the story line was not good enough, could be a number of reasons.

I haven't posted a thread for a while, so a chance to look back at some of my finds, and others from over the years. I have had my share of banners so I can't complain really, but I must admit I thought some were a no brainer, and some unlikely to make it up top.

I'll start with one that I thought was a no brainer, but didn't go up top despite probably being one of the rarest of my finds. A key dating back to the 9th century and most likely from the Viking/Saxon period.

Silver Searcher that key is one of the most incredible relics I've ever seen!!!! That should have been a SUPER BANNER find. Absolutely gorgeous man....wow

I have two that I thought had a pretty good chance but didn't make it. Both of these finds got quite a few Banner votes.

First are the (2) Republic of Texas Infantry buttons that I found back in February 2016. This button was a BANNER find for another poster back in 2012 You almost never see these button posted. They command big $$ on the collectors market. Here is the other posters find

The other one was the 2 reale cob I found in May 2016. Although we do see a fair number cobs found in certain east coast states, they are almost always 1/2 and 1 reals. You never see 2 reales being dug and you don't see them dug in Southwestern PA.

Then there was my very first post on T-net where I posted a 1797 (16 star) Draped Bust Dime. There are only about 125 of these estimated to still exist. Several people stated that this would have made banner if it wasn't my first post

Sometimes what you think is important. May be not so much.

I had high hopes but.........because of my story telling skills(none) and no provenance on this Authenticated Fur Trade Carved Ornament Stone with carvings on both sides of one stone. It just got kicked to the curb.
No matter. I admire it everyday and wonder why I was so lucky that it found me.

I never find anything worthy of being on a banner. It's just the nature of living in a town established barely 100 years ago.

I absolutely feel the same way. Granted occasionally I do come across stuff nearly 160 years old when I civil war relic hunt but still pushing my luck

I agree with Jason there is nothing Banner Worthy in Oklahoma

Nor in arkansas less yoy get lucky enough to find an amazing civil war relic or some fluke that you find something prior to 1830

Pretty much the same here in NE Texas, unless you get lucky, did find a CS tongue, but it didn't make banner, don't expect to be able to beat that

Thats incredible! !!! thats the heaviest ring ive ever herd of !!!! I guess it was to big for even the biggest human because it obviously slid off someones finger. Ya that should have made it up there.. wow !!

I always have to believed that one item needs to stand on its own as a BANNER find and be pretty special to be worthy. If it's not what's the point? But I had one hunt where I found 10 pre 1750 British coppers including a 1723 Woods Hibernia, a stunning 1749 real, complete pewter shoe buckle frame and a complete pewter rat tail spoon. Probably a BANNER collection of finds but I was happy it didn't get voted up. Only the most special finds should go up. I am very satisfied with my 2 BANNERS and believe them worthy. I suppose the 2 complete latten spoons I recently found could have gone up by I already ha e a BANNER a pair of those. But they are damn hard to find in the states. This is a fun thread

I was quite surprised when the Queen Mary Groat I found made the Banner...Cru was to, and that was on the old TreasureNet which I think was harder to get up there. Not really a rare find, scares yes but not rare, I have found four in total. So it did come as a surprise it made it up top.

Biggest Gold ring I have seen was 103 grams.. of 14k at the time it was found melt was around 2600.oo found by a friend. I do have video of the incredible find. But do not have permission to post.

Mine is small compared but Platinum with a 2 plus karat Diamond Valued at 23 to 27, they offered 9204.oo for it but I declined.

All of these were found in 2014 .. the Plat is on the right. No Banner, But who cares about Banners when your a Pirate and digging gold ....

Hi friends, in our first post here at TNet many months ago, we showed our #5 Grand Army Mass Militia button dated 1775, before the button started being semi-mass produced in a different pattern. Some folks here wanted to vote it a Banner, but at the time, we were too new to receive Banner votes. However, last night, we got one banner vote from BigWaveDave (thanks, Dave!). Sure could use a Banner to get us through the long Massachusetts winter, hehehe...! ;-). Here's our awesome button, recently treated with the Elmers glue preservation technique, thanks to advice from our friends at TNet! Hope you all have an enjoyable week. -Lisa & John

Ok I'll play. At least when you don't make the banner you still get to keep the find.

The day I found this things were not going great, and I was actually 2nd guessing my site choice for the day, but it was getting to be too late to change so decided to stick with it. I would have been very happy with a Rev War period 24th pewter in any condition, but was very surprised to see a nice officer button pop out of a little patch of iron that didn't seem to have anything other than 1800s farm junk.

This one was particularly sweet for me to find as it was my first Rev War British numbered officer button, and took 14 years to find. If I were to consider finds before I joined the Tnet I'd easily have about half dozen or so to post... maybe even more. I've always been curious what my banner count would be at had I joined in 1999 because Ironhorse and I used to dig much more, and got the good results that comes with getting out a lot.... not to mention good early sites were much easier to find.

Great thread Silver Searcher, and that key is mega cool! I could definitely see that up top!

It irritates me when people downplay the banner. Why the attitude that it's "uncool" to be excited to make the banner? As long as people don't get obsessed with it, I think it's great to post a special find and then be recognized by your peers. Seeing the amazing posts on the banner inspired me to keep digging and stay interested when I was new.

Now, back to this "thought it was banner worthy" thread. I have made a few finds that I thought could make the banner in the past. This first one was my very first post on treasurenet, and I'm sure that's why it didn't make the banner. I found this huge coin spill- a Morgan and two Barber halves. The 1896 half has an "S" mint mark making it a semi key and worth a few bucks. View attachment 1374200

I have found a lot of things that might have made a banner IF I was a member when I found them.

Practice bombs from 1917, first bombs ever dropped from airplanes:



A German WWII wound badge found in a lake in the middle of Michigan:



A 1.1 carat platinum ring:



Oil lantern from a horse and buggy or early car at the bottom of a lake, company went out of business in 1913:



357 magnum and 1800's 22 pistol both found in lakes:



And of course my very best coin find. a 1893CC 10.00 eagle found in a park in SLC UT.



Anyway, you get the idea. However as stated I was not a member when I found any of them. Since I became a member last year I made banner with a 18K 22.5 gram ring that I was VERY SURPRISED made it. It was just another ring to me and nothing super special. Well it was worth 729.00 in scrap so it was worth a pretty penny!

I have voted for banners that never materialized and I have not voted for others, that to me were to far fetched stories that actually made banner. I am not the judge and maybe they were truthful. However, knowing the limitations of machines I have the right to my suspicions as we all do.

...This is so true, when I first joined I never gave a thought about the banner, even why I got the first it was only because Cru kept bringing it back up, I wasn't that bothered. I suppose it became a bit more competitive the more I got into the forum.
