Post Hole Banks

Have any of you Treasure hunters EVER found a cash under a fence post ? I have heard and read so many times people would make a post hole bank and hide there money in them. I just wonder if anyone ever had any luck and if so how did you find it and recover it ?

None here. In fact the way they build fences around here, you’d be really hard pressed to be able to lift a post up enough to get under it without breaking a wire or two.

That's about the same around here. I have read so much as this was a common practice years back but i have never heard or read of anyone finding one

I've cut a lot of posts and dug a lot of holes for them.
Added rock if one was at hand.
Didn't have a cent to spare.

Had a couple hiding spots dug.
Down and under certain trees.
(In sight of posts. But then there were lots of posts).

To leave a loose post would have invited trouble.
And a horse watching me lift a post would have thought it a neat trick to duplicate probably.

One quarter horse kept a vertical plank loose in her stall to watch the house from at will.
How she used it after I realized it wasn't just loose at first suggested she was a bit more clever than I gave her credit for. And I'd already spent plenty enough time with her to know she was no slouch.
She tested my fences she watched me build. And escaped at will more than once.
A border (quarter- Arab) never did.

But back to post bank.
A timber with a hole in it inside a stall or the barn somewhere else would be more out of sight. Top of a door with holes or cuts into the door. Under a feed bin or threshold.
Yes at night you might get away with more but what if you had a wife and kids and guests?
Tracks from door to pasture instead of outhouse in the morning , Jr, might get to wondering where your card playing money is. Again.

Neighbor or spy or about anyone sees you lift a post and frog around before replacing it again might be suspicious or curios.
The second time less so. But more knowledgeable!
And if no one is around to see you , do you really need a posthole bank?
They were a good idea back when when so many homes caught fire.
But you had to have some paper money to hide outside a bank to start.

I once accused (in fun) a friend who's multigenerational farm turned up about thirty cents in clad , of being from a poor family.
His Grandfather farmed and had a job in town as well.
His workshop was very low roofed and dirt floored.
A stove for winter heater. That shop was a likely spot to bank a trifle for him.
But other structures existed too.
An item was in the floor joists of the farmhouse.
A very old beater (that ran great)truck/car was hidden and used by a group of characters annually around parade time. (For good, not evil. Despite the gunfire.)

I've always wondered about the farm I was raised on back in the 1950s. My step grandfather won money playing pool and people back then didn't trust banks. His bedroom where he slept had a direct view out of a window that aimed right at a corner post. I suppose he possibly dug it up before he passed but he was not in good health. It is all farm land now.

A detecting friend hunted an old chicken house and found three silver dollars. People hid things because the chickens went into alarm mode with a visitor.

Yes chicken houses were sounding alarms so was Dogs. people buried things under thee dog houses

i dug a basement with dirt ramp a few times for one old dog in the summer. A skid atop and then the house on it and then fill any side gaps with sand.
She'd go down and hoot a few times before napping to approve of the coolness.

With her it would have been better to hide something inside against the roof. (Double walled and insulated all around and above.)

I heard about similar stories several times here in Mexico.

The closer one was about a cowboy telling me where exactly was a hidden cash under the fence post, when I asked him about reason of why he did not go and looking directly in that fence post…

Was the same instant that he disappear 🫠 like a gosht in the middle of my psychosis.🙊

A friend from Mexico told of his grandfather telling him about a belt of Pesos he hid in the brushy area behind his home when he feared it could be taken..
Grandfather said he never found it after hiding it. Though he looked.

Don't forget the rows and rows of wooden fence post with metal tin-can lids nailed on the top for weather protection. Could one possibly be hollow? No easy way to check but I always look for one that has a lid that is fastened different than the rest.

I have always read and heard that corner posts that could be seen from a favorite room . were ideal spots. I have NEVER found one but just wondered if anyone else ever has . It does kind of make sense though
