Since you conversed with the highly respected....
What insight did she share, as what part of the armor did it come from?

I say breast plate for sure. Reminds me of this:

i can't wait to find out for sure..... If so..... it will be a historical find for sure.

and in my own hometown nonetheless!

when i started metal detecting i had an overwhelming feeling that there was ancient history under my feet.

i swear i can feel it in my bones when standing in a place of reverence.

Once again……this is one of the things that would have gone directly to dump for me. Glad y’all are sharing…..better to know what you’ve got prior to disposal.
dude. for real. i actually found a bronze roman fibula under a tree in HAYS. KANSAS. and i was ignorant.... threw it away and then later found out what it was. its sitting in the dump (or wherever our trash goes these days) my heart sank man....

See if you can get it tested for the metal content which they should be able to give you periods and origins of the metal. That would then give you an idea of what it is and a year range of when it was produced. From what has been explained to me all metals have origin signatures, kind of like DNA.

Fantastic and important find. I suggest contacting an Archaeologists in your area to see if they would like to review the find and possibly expand a search. Dr. Seymour may be able to recommend an Archaeologist to contact. If one artifact has been found there may be more at that location. A qualified Archaeologist would be needed to document any further artifacts found. If other artifacts are located then the exact GPS location, stratum in the soil, orientation and other factors should be documented to discern what the site may represent. It would be good to detect inch-by-inch with some high performance deep-seeking equipment. If the soil mineralization is lower then a good VLF machine with a larger coil would work. If the mineralization is high then a pulse induction (PI) detector with a large loop is best. Good Luck. Ed in Arizona.
