Some of you may remember the early 1900's "A. Jacobs & Sons" POLICE button I dug up at the plantation house about a week ago. In my years on detecting this is my favorite button EVER, and one I was hoping to keep to pass on to my kids.
Well, it's not to be.
Last week I did some checking around and found out that the company is still in business, and has been around since the late 1800's. I e-mailed them last week and sent pictures of the button I had found thinking they would be happy to hear the story and see the button. Today I received a reply from Josh, one of the descendants of the company. Here's his reply:

Dear Mr. Snyder,
My uncle, Robert Friedlander, just forwarded me the email you sent him. Congrats on your recent find. You have found a special piece of our family's history. I have just printed the image you sent and have mailed the copy to my grandfather. He has just turned 86, I am sure your picture will bring back many memories.
Would you be willing to trade for your buttons. I would love to give something like those to my son one day. As you can believe we have many new and old brass police and military buttons as well as patches and other accouterments.
Again, congrats on you find.
Respectfully,
Josh Hyatt F & F and A. Jacobs and Sons, Inc.

Here is their company history:

Well, being the softy that I am, I offered it to Josh with one exception. He is going to take a picture of him and his son with the button in front of their company, and e-mail it to me. I'll post it when I get it from him.
He offered me some other items from his company which I didn't ask for. I guess he's just happy to be getting this nice little piece of family history.
Rather than just send it back, I decided to do it in style. I made a nice display for him with the buttons background, the companies history, a picture of where and when it was recovered, and a blowup picture of the front and back of the button.
I will truly miss this button, as it was by far my favorite one, but I felt it would mean more to them.
Hopefully this will bring some good karma. ;D

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

MM...You did a fine thing. If everyone could see how much most of us like history and don't want to destroy history, we might have an easier time of finding places to hunt. I'm sure he will be very pleased..Wish you many many more great finds up there in NC.

What a nice story!

And do you mind if i use this in my report on metal detecting? It would be great to help prove that metal detectorists are great people!

No problem. Just don't put the picture of me in drag from last December. I think we lost half our members from that frightning experience. :o ;D
We ARE a great group of folks. That's for sure.

Yeah , I guess you are a class act, in your own way. I suppose we knew we weren't gonna get rich money wise with this hobby. You might as well get rich in the ways that really matter. Well done .

Truely an outstanding find and super good deed in returning it to the family that made it.

Definitly rates an Honorable Mention post.

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Doug, you made a great decision on that Police button. Once you see the family members' smiles, it will plant a memory that you will never forget.

I hope you dig up a coppa tomorrow, along with a pistareen...in the same hole. ;)

Keep the fever high, man!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

You did it right! I'm sure that they will remember you kindly for a long time. WTG

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Excellent! You not only provided these folks with some of their family's history, but you also represented all of us M/Ders in a wonderful light! (Thank you for that!) Maybe when someone asked to do a little M/Ding on their property, they won't think twice about saying, with a big smile on their faces, "Anytime!"

Thanks for sharing this great story with us all!

Re: Parting is such sweet sorrow - POLICE button has a new home

Cool deal MM. You know that button has a place in my heart. I have been fortunate to find several old Police Buttons from the late 1800's from my adopted home town of Augusta, Ga. I was an instructor there at the Police Academy for 5 years and taught many a good Police Officer from that area, some who are no longer with us and who gave their lives for the city.

You did a good thing there.

Take Care,

DaChief
