An intellegent reply and I for one respect that.However as I said the truth is most often found in the middle and unfortunately the current governanve attitude is nowhere near the middle.Sway to far from it and inevitably freedoms are lost.Its sad really.

The public land issues will probably swing too far the other way for awhile until a balanced is reached.
In NM 250000 acres were designated Wilderness. Up north by Taos. While this will protect us from golf courses it also limits how the land can be used. So no point in looking for a gold mine there unless the designation has some wiggle room. The paper this morning showed more land south might be considered. The area is one of 21 sites in the world where fairy crosses (Starolites) can be found. While not particularly valuable they are fascinating to find and if the area gets re-designated will probably be off limits.
To the south the Organ mountains are also being considered. NM is the 5th largest state and can seem limitless to some but when the bite is the size of these it gets whittled down quite a bit. Seems saving land from destruction also takes it away from most other actiivties.
A few years ago a vast area in the Jemez Mountains was added to the Fed lands. While it prevents development it also limits use to those that see land use as hiking and camping. You will never convince them that a dredge doesn't hurt rivers and streams anymore than a spring flood.
It will take work to find the balance.
On the other side a Rep (Pierce) south of here wants to drill, drill, drill. A little lizard might not survive if the area he wants is opened to drilling. It's not about the lizard but about how close the area is to being destroyed because of it's fragile nature. It would become a wasteland because of a few shortsighted rich folks. He made his bucks with rigs and got into politics to insure he always will. So he gets the outdoor people riled up about loosing their freedoms to hunt when it has little to do with them at all. He would take the area for himself and others like him and the sportsmen will still get $crewed with No Trespassing signs.
I guess in terms of picking sides if I side with free enterprise I can be stuck with Eco- terrorists and siding with huggers I get stuck with rules and regs.
Rules and regs can be changed down the road (maybe) but Eco-destruction lasts. In the end, like most compromises, no one's happy and no one wins.

All good points and I see we are eye to eye on more than I assumed.A balance must be reached or 8.00 a gallon gasoline is coming(much to the delight of some).Perhaps the pendulum will run out of momentum and settle in the middle at some point.I sure hope so.

As to the title of this thread....if we keep voting in big govt.believers,we shall keep going in this direction and btw,once we are kicked off our own land we arent likely ever to be allowed to return.

The idea is , and always has been, that our Federal land is held for the use and benefit for all citizens, that does not mean the constant restriction of use, or in the non-use of these public lands that are owned and funded by us.

A good example of this is our national forest lands. They were initially managed for the sustained yield of our renewable resources, and the multiple use of the public for recreation, timber, water, and such. They were not acquired for the total preservation and none use of these resources. Every time a special interest group wants to save a tree, animal, or scenic vista....Which ever administration in control designates new restrictions on our resoures that become non productive and economically dead. If we continued to subscribe to the management doctrines og Gifford Pinchot, founder of the U.S. forest service we could supply the materials for our housing needs without having to import a large majority . The more land that is preserved,( meaning non-use), vs. conserved( wise-use), the more our natural resources just go to waste.

These public lands are bought and managed with the tax dollars of the citizens, and the Gov't needs to listen and act in the wisest capacity for all, not a few.

The problem is who choses which few get to use land belonging to us all for their profit?

You say we could use this land to solve all our lumber needs. OK, I don't have a lumber need and i don't want the woods behind my house chopped down. It is all public land. NIMBY It is that simple.

Like i said, i'm glad the gov restricted developement in our state before big biz could ruin it.

You make solid points.I dont believe many would enjoy seeing OUR land be destroyed by corporate greed.But lets ponder this...our economy and thus our own lifestyles depend upon intelligent management of the vast resources god granted upon our land.The middle answer I speak of is just that...responsible and intelligent access to those resources.Would you say that is a fair expectation?

Does it make sense to you that you and I are told we cant even ride a bicycle on OUR land while expected to pay for its management.Is it ok to run hundreds of miles of fencing to,"enhance"the natural beauty?How about simple personal visitation access without aquiring a permit?Ride a horse?Heck....just walk?

If you are amoung those who believe that access to OUR land should be restricted heavily than I am a bit puzzled.Is $8.00 a gal. fuel something that actually sounds ok to you without reguard to the millions who would suffer greatly?I really dont think you do.

I believe the answer is in the middle and have little patience for those who,"know whats best for me"extremism is just that reguardless of which side it resides.I,for one,have had it with self gratifying exteremists.They should be marginilized.imho

Republicans control one half of Congress. Liberals like to issue revisionist history.
For example, they like to forget that they took control of Congress and a year and half later the economy took a dump.
They also like to forget that their housing policies (Community reinvestment act) that forced banks to make bad loans caused the collapse in the first place.

It reminds me of the gun control debate where the NRA gets blamed for mass shootings, yet these shootings happen in liberal organized gun free zones by the mentally ill the left let out of the hospitals and refuse to treat properly. How many NRA members are in Chicago shooting each other in the streets?
