last winter, i detected this buckle at a family member's property in rural Olympia, Washington. His house was built in the early 1920's, and previously had livestock.

Could it pre-date the 1920's? (because I also found square nails which I know haven't been used since the 1890's.) I do not know much about horse tackle, but my best guess is that this buckle is related to horses. The extent of the rust makes me think that it is old.

I would really appreciate if you guys could help identify the age and use of this buckle

looks like a belly cinch strap buckle from a saddle but can't help with the age.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard lucas1889! Take a look at Sub-Forums: California for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

2nd - I pulled these from other TN threads...

I doesn't look like a buckle to me, but rather a half of a horse bit. More photographs would be helpful though.

My house was built in the early 1930's and it's full of square nails...

The mystery is solved! It is half of a horse bit with the end of the hook broken off. Thank you!
