This is one of the best finds that I have and it started off as just another day at the creek. Yesterday, I went with my wife and daughter along with my sister and her husband to cool off from this 100+ degree heat we are having here in Southwest Georgia. Shortly after we got in the water, which was less than knee deep, my sister pointed out two flint tools she spotted laying on the creek bed. These finds told me that there was likely points in the area so I started looking as well. I began running my fingers through the sand and finding pottery shards. After I worked that area with little luck, I decided to move down stream and try another spot. I had to pull some limbs out of the way to get a new area cleaned. Thats when this pipe came up. I did not find any points but thats o.k. with this taking thier place! This will likely be the center piece in my collection for quite some time. Any thoughts or comments are welcomed!! I've also posted this find on "Todays Finds as well.

Well, Thank you! However, please don't keep that opinion about what you will find. If you read my original post: It started off as just another day at the creek.......

I remember the story well... I felt like I was at the creek with you. I could almost feel myself wanting to look at it every few minutes to make sure it was really there... I've done it! I still do it. I love it when that happens! Congratulations on that again my friend.

I just wanted to share a picture that means a lot to me. Just to be able to hold this pipe is a great feeling. I could not begin to imagine what it must have felt like to find it. Way to go buddy. I hope you find the missing piece.

Here are the pottery pieces that I found prior to the pipe. All found within yards of each other.

Wow! Thanks!! Have you determined the potterys' origin?
If so..that should tell the story.

I think.. like stated before I belive... you have an associated artifact from what's known as the Southeastern Cerimonial Complex.(southern cult)
That trade network included among others... Temple mound and surrounding sites in Georgia as well as Spiro mound in Oklahoma.
It was a huge Mississippian trade network they traded as far south as Mexico and north to Ohio.

I live about an hour east of Kolomoki mounds which for those of ya'll not from around here it is in Blakely (Early County) Georgia. I agree with Gator that it is swiftcreek shards. I just need to find a whole example!

Keep us up to date on this Rebel. I dont want to miss a thing.

Getting closer anyway ..this came from Spiro Mound.

I'm guessing you could even use the type of spiral and other designs to eventually figure out what band..or even what paddle marked the pottery cherds you found. I know they've done it here.
You might have to access Jstor at a local college to get all the "real" info.

Well yeah that pose is common. You smoke what they did and you will be looking like that:laughing7:

Sorry to back paddle and defiantly don't let this get inflamed, but the guy who stated 99% of the platform pipes are fakes was probably talking about the ones on the market. I'm not sure of that but, if so, he's probably correct. GA, we know you found a perfect authentic platform. I'm not sure if that cat was aware of the fact that yours isn't a purchased pipe.

I guarantee he wont be responding NC.
