Pin Pointers ????

The free one I got from KellyCo, with my ACE is hit-and-miss. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've watched the dvd, and am doing it "right", but, it's still an Iffy-unit.

Hi Bluedog,
I'm new to this hobby too. Have a no-name pin pointer that stinks. Based on what I've read in these forums I'm asking for a Garrett Pro Pointer for my birthday next month.

Detecting would be miserable and 5 times longer per signal if I didn't have my Garrett Pro Pointer. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!
I don't know how people manage to hunt without one. Then again, I haven't QUITE mastered reading the signals of my Ace 350 yet or finding exactly where it is pointing to when I use the pinppoint function. But the Garret Pointer negates my incompetency :)

You have been given good advice..... the top three are the Garrett, Minelab, and Whites (in no particular order). There also is the Vibra Probe, and for the cheap end the Harbor Freight one works ok for the $$$ until the switch dies.

I'd suggest saving for one of the top three.. but until then you can also take handfuls of dirt and swing them over your coil - let the Ace 250 do the work for now.

Maybe i just want to go to fast with this hobby and thinking the pin pointer will make the diff. as am still learning the sounds with the ace 250. just bigger holes for now, tks for the replies looking forward to any more that might pop up

May I ask why you want to go fast with this hobby when you haven't even discovered your machine yet? Equipment isn't the be all to end all, research, research, research is the most important factor with this hobby, along with patience..

Trust me...Its not the machine...DVD's arent going to help you just by watching it

Pinpointers are important as they keep you from digging a pit to recover a dime....

Understood, but when you really don't know your machine yet, wouldn't it be wiser to discover the capabilities of your machine before anything else?

Why dig a pit? Slice the ground over the target and spread it open with your hands. After recovery, press the slice closed. Hard to explain but very easy to do. Us old timers actually survived quite well before pinpointers were invented. We even enjoyed the hobby then too. :laughing7:

Only if your hunting on your own private property. Poorly dug holes in public places can lock everyone out.

I'm my opinion it also helps you learn how your machine pinpoints...

I am different than some, when hunting land I use pinpointer to locate exact spot of target, I cut no plugs, I slit sod about 2 inches and probe to remove or dig with my small shovels. One is 7/8" wide other is 1 1/4" wide.

When I am done I pinch sod back together, you can not find where I have removed target, there are no holes, plugs or visible signs.....

I wish that worked in Rocky Desert Areas or hard compacted Texas clay

I use the Whites Bullseye TRX and am very happy with it

just stay away the made in china brands.

Read "the cheap $15 one carried by Harbor Freight Tools you see mentioned in several threads on here and on Youtube". Complete waste of time. I got one last year and it lasted about a week before the push button crapped out (a common complaint) and when it did work it only beeped when it was about half an inch from the target. Ditched that and got a Pro Pointer. Even though mine was used and only beeps (doesn't vibrate) it's miles ahead of a brand new Harbor Freight Chinese piece of garbage.
