Hey all, switched it up today and went to the 1875 house as the last couple trips to the 1843 have been disappointing.

The place the owner told me I could start seems to have had some fill but I think I was over an old sand box for a bit (basically where those two arrows are on the Google pic). It was over this spot that I got my best find today.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get rid of the sand stuck to the metal? One awesome thing about this toy… the hammer cocks and trigger works 😁 Wish I could attach a video of that but alas…
Ideas for preserving while maintaining its function would also be appreciated.

I’m guessing that’s a Hubley cap gun.
The Diamond H was used a lot and the steer head was semi-common as well. I believe I had one of those with faux pearl grips. Very nice find!

Oh perfect. Appreciate the company name. Allowed me to easily find a pic of one not from the ground.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

These are just Ideas for cleaning maybe an ultrasonic cleaner like they clean bullets up with for reloading it is a dry process but it will probably lose it's patina. If not that maybe some of the cleaning pencils for coins or tooth picking it clean.

I ended up tooth picking last night. It started blossoming zinc rot (lack of a better name or description) as soon as it started to dry so I started a hot wax treatment like I would for iron. Figure it’s better to preserve the look even at the expense of being able to use the hammer/trigger 🤷🏻‍♂️

I use a microwave proof measuring cup, add equal parts of boiling water say 1 cup, add I cup vinegar & a few tablespoons of baking soda, drop piece in before adding baking soda, cover with foil & let sit until cooled, it will react to the rust & gently remove without damaging the pieces, use a soft old toothbrush, repeat if necessary, it works for me, good luck & happy digging. ☺️☺️

So apparently video can be posted 🤷🏻‍♂️
