Permission on private land

I'm thinking some people might be afraid of someone getting injured on their property and filing a lawsuit. Then on the other hand I have had people say yes and "come any time and no need to check in every time "

After researching a homestead location on an 1865 plat map, I called the owner of said land and popped the big question.
He said if it was up to him, I could detect but regretfully, he couldn't allow it because portions of his fields were currently being leased
by other farmers and it would be too much of a hassel to clear it with them and then, his lawyer.

My favorite thing to do is swing by a garage sale at the site of an old home, and offer the homeowner $5-$20 to hunt the yard, especially it they are a bit reluctant. I also may offer up old coin(s) or relics that I find. You see, not much that we dig has high value...to me, it's all about the hunt.

Sounds like he just doesn't what you hunting on his land. I am a few miles west of you and most of the farmers I know almost welcome the idea of detecting fields. Over the years many of the farm fields have expanded with the larger equipment we have today. Many of the old steel fencing has been removed in order to create larger fields. And if they didn't get all the barb wire and steel fence post cleaned up,, stuff like that will do damage to equipment. Heck one of the larger tractor tires is a few thousand alone. I have even been paid to detect fields looking for garbage that would do damage to equipment. Anyway I always bring up the damage to equipment due to large steel objects possibly in your field and how it could save you or your farmer a two thousand dollar bill for a new tire if you let me take a spin around your field, something along those lines.

That`s how i have been doing it for 40 years...and why i have 6000 acker s to hunt, never offer a dime to hunt their fields, and have been payed for finding important parts the came off the equipment...ya they come find me.
So when i hear of some people offer money to hunt peoples house yards....I DO NOT TELL those people any thing.....cuz they will just try to buy you out......very stupid in the long run....done by myopic people.
If we started offering money back 45 years ago to hunt people`s yards....will just think of what you would have now.

Personally I have never paid to hunt either. Plowed fields in my experience are the easiest permissions to get for sure. There is no lawn to ruin and most farmers I know like the idea of having clean non trashy soil. Yes once I got paid to detect a old barbed wire and steel fence rows farmer just tore out with his front end loader. It was about 4 smaller fields and all fences gone to make up a 1,000 acre plus field. It took a few days to detect and they missed about 40 posts and other pieces, wire ect. Which for could of done some potential damage down the line. He was one happy farmer once I showed him a pickup truck full of iron and steel pulled from his field. And I am sure in your case also G.P.A. metal something like that will sure help a fellow get his foot in the door on a few acres to detect.

Very interesting thread!

I would gladly pay 20 bucks to anyone who would let me hunt their yard, field or farm 100 years or older!!

When talking to someone about detecting there yard or something and it looks like a no I have even offered to give them all my finds "you can keep everything". That's normally my last resort if I really want to detect their property. For me some of the fun is just finding and detecting. I will admit it I have found some really potentially great sites in the past and have thought about it and would gladly trade some money just to spend a few hours detecting the area if I can keep all finds. :laughing7:

lol "you can keep everything I find, aside from any gold coins, draped busts, pine, oak or willow tree shillings, or any other assorted coins of extreme value":tongue3:

I know some places I would pay to hunt, but just a few, and I know they have tremendous potential. One yard I got permission to hunt was loaded and after about 10 minutes hunting with a dozen pre 1900 coins in my pouch the owner came out and said he decided that he didn't want me to be on his property, so I left and have been back several times seeking permission again to no avail. With yards over 80 years old, I am willing to split with the owner if that's what it takes to get me on the property. Problem is in the splitting, like a rare coin, so to avoid altercation I have to have a signed contract where both parties agree to let me sell off the goodies then split the total take, along with any common coins. I always give the homeowner a shot at any keys and what might be lost items of no real value anyways but which they might want. I hunted one old property where someone in the family had lost a gold ring and the deal was I could keep all the coins as he just wanted the ring, I found 3 gold rings which I showed him, and none of them were the one he was looking for and he wasn't interested in any of the ones I had found so I got to keep them all, plus I had several nice old pre 1900 coins and a slew of newer ones. Sometimes you have to pay to play, but you need to be selective as a lot of old yards mainly contain old trash.

No really,, with the owners standing watching and helping I have detected and never even touched many old coins and relics. Kids get a hold of a Ih and woosh that's gone into someone's collection. Problem I have found with this is once you offer to do that for a few people you have to do it for all possible permissions they toss your way. But then I have hunted with more generous owners who let me keep most anything short of gold!
