Most of the pennies I find are so coated in limestone they are impossible to use. I found one penny that was well over 1/4th inch thick.

Yeah, if I was making something like that, I would first tumble the coins until they were nice and clean. Then weed out the zinc cents, as they are just plain junk IMO. Once built, I would then spray them with a clear finish to keep them from tarnishing in the future.
