Here is a little more info on the subject.

Cougar Subspecies

While 32 subspecies have been classically described, the latest genetic analyses suggest that there are six subspecies,* but ongoing debate surrounds a possible seventh (the Florida panther):

North America
The natural re-establishment of cougars in the Black Hills of South Dakota appears to have provided a source population for recolonization of the Midwest U.S. by cougars. Education of the public in the Midwest to increase understanding of this carnivore could be key to its re-establishment.

Good drawing for folks who may not be able to differentiate a wolf/coyote from a cougar paw print! Nice research Nugs...(not for me) I'm a "two finger" neanderthal when it comes to this pc!! :)

Where are you nsdq?..It's start'n to get dark! Your not watching out the window at a pile of 'catnip' and meat you put out..With camera/phone at the ready are you?? ;) Just Kidding :) Hope you get a pic if you see it again!

The weather can be a real bummer. Btw. Thank you for your service. :coffee2:

Been around 10 years or so but a very good friend of mines father had such a cat leap across the Ridge Road about 2 miles or so from the entrance at Mount Holly.
We have tons of coyotes too. And another time I was archery hunting in a recently clear cut area,,in the snow and saw that a bobcat ( I hope) had tracked me when I was walking out at the end of the day. Its tracks were right on top of mine.

I don't believe one word from the Game Commission on anything. We used to go spotlighting when I was a kid,,, on Pine Road. It was nothing to literally see a hundred or more deer on any given night. Now you can run Pine Road from end to end and MABYE,,, just maybe see a dozen.

Rumor has it the auto insurance lobbyists had somehow gotten the bag limits raised in order to reduce deer claims. Who knows.

But as far as a big cat,,, I believe you,,, they ARE out there.

I,m sure I saw a large cat last year on a closed road leading to woods . I do mean large, with a long tail.
It crossed the unpaved road a hundred plus yards in front of me, and appeared fully a cars width.
I backed up to my car and got out of there.

Who the hell would want a mountain lion for a pet? Seems like people keep getting stupider.

I think this critter likes skunks .............

Get a game camera. Get photo of it,the tracks and plaster evidence of the tracks. If you do, you'll be famous. Like Bigfoot, mountain cats in Pa are a myth to most. I am not doubting what you saw. But, just what you think you saw. Please prove me wrong and settle the myth. There were panthers here around 130 yrs ago.

You won't be famous, you'll be anonymous. I don't believe the BS about the game commission "releasing" big cats, but I do believe some remain (whether from the initial wild population or an established population from elsewhere) and they don't like to talk about it. I worked at a wildlife rehab center for several years where we saw every make and model of Pennsylvania wildlife come through the door. My boss was on her way home (in the Laurel Highlands) and saw a hit-and-killed big cat on the side of the road. She turned around, took photos, and called the game commission. The cat disappeared after they showed up and they told her she was mistaken about the ID.

Still, I'd say give them a call if you get a picture because once they finally admit that they're still around they'll have a better understanding of just how many are there through the help of the reports they've been getting all this time.

Answer me this...

Why is it, every time a large cat is reported east of the Mississippi River, people come out of the woodwork saying..
No way it's possible.. You must have seen something else!

If it was a Bigfoot, you could understand the doubt from people. No proof of Bigfoot anywhere in the World.

But, large cats do exist!

Same reason moon landing is thought to be a fake

If people want to be belived there has to be physical evidence. I means seriously it's that simeple a picture a body something. Otherwise there is no more proof to them saying they saw a cougar than there is to me saying I saw elvis and bigfoot playing hopscotch.

I think it possible, but 2 - 2 1/2 in wide is too small for an adult lion. bobcat seems likelier.
We have recent reports here in indiana, one by a cop who saw one eating a roadkill deer

The difference is, Elvis is confirmed dead and no physical evidence of Bigfoot is known.

Large cats have been confirmed in the East.. so what's so hard not to believe?

Coming in late on this thread, located in SW VA, as the mountain plateau drops off to the lower lands into the Piedmont = Winston Salem, NC.

I came home here after retiring a couple months ago, land in my family for many generations. At the very base of the North slope of Bull Mountain in Patrick County, VA.

I haven't seen it yet, but 3 years ago Mom saw a mountain lion in the front yard of my house here. What got me was what she said. She said it was bigger than she thought one would be. She said that its' back was about the level of the kitchen table. I'm certainly not looking forward to meeting that one!

But then, this past Summer, I saw a coyote here, and I was VERY impressed. That darned evil, and very capable looking creature was of the size and maybe a little fuller than a good sized, strong, German Shepard. That impressed me too! And I heard them critters chattering up the holler about a month ago.

I'd say that I'd believe there is a big cat in the woods & mountains of Penn State!!!
