PART 2 - "This Old House"

Well, the weather here in NC was cold and rainy today, so I decided to go back to the old property I've been searching since I could hunt with a roof over my head. As you can see the house is about on it's last leg. Other pictures provided are of some of the outbuildings and outhouse too.
Someone has discovered my secret hunting place, because a lot of boards had been ripped off the walls since I was there last week. I started ripping out boards that there around windows and doorways, that hadn't been checked yet. Well, guess what? It was my lucky day! In a small room extension (pantry?) off the kitchen in back, I saw the boards over the doorway had not been pulled yet. From inside the room I pulled a few boards and noticed a flat bottle sitting on the ledge over the doorway. It was covered with mice nesting material. (See pictures) My heart was pumping now. I slowly pulled out the nesting material, and the bottle. There was also some kind of key (?) up there, along with a jar lid (Boyd's Genuine Porcelain). Unfortunately, no cache. Darn! I just wonder why this was sealed from both sides, and if perhaps coins used to be in the jar lid? I know this isn't a mega-treasure, but to me it was an exciting find. In the outhouse, I dug up the belt buckle, buttons, etc.
In one of the sheds, I found a corked bottle with white powder in it. I have no idea what it is inside? I doubt this was Cheech & Chong's old place. ;D Well, that was my day. No big finds, but a ton of fun exploring.
Does anyone know what that key looking thing is that was behind the wall? It is heavy and looks like lead. Note the air bubbles in it when it was made. There is also a "+" stamped into it. Help?
Another long-winded story from me.

I think? not 100 % sure, but your Metal with the dog ears looks like a old clock key.The added weight with the "+" has me stumped.
Yep, the thing that looks like a clock key or music box key is really odd. It has had a lump of lead (?) added to it at some point in time. And the + mark has been handcarved into it as well. Very strange indeed. It's almost as if the key was modified so that it wouldn't fit in the clock/whatever anymore. And why the depressions in that extra piece of glob?

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Papa,
You are welcome anytime you want to drive the 3 hours to get here. ;D
I hope you're feeling better. I'm looking forward to hitting that old park up that way again soon. So many places, so little time. :(

something else.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Grab a shovel and dig out that out house they used to throw bottles and everything else down them holes. also look for a sunken spot elsewhere around there the older privy spot is there somewhere. as for the bottle dump the deeper you dig the older the bottles. Good Luck!!!!!!

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Look's like this place will take a while to hunt..Is there an attic, have you checked under the floor board's up there?Good luck at this place,I can see some great find's being pulled out of here....Keep us posted on the bottle dump also....HH!!

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

G'day MM, I was just cruising the threads here and noticed something neat yet way odd about that VERY kool (clock key maybe) thingy you got there. The xtra piece of lead that TT is referring to, also has an indentation below that handcarved + there. Suprised that nobody has noticed it, so hope everyone scopes that out again, it's worth closer scrutiny. What I somehow percieve here, is a sort of, animalish footprint, which seems to be causing that so called dent or depression! 8) O.K., now, look really close at the whole depression. Do you see what I see? ??? A kind of 3 toed animalish footprint? ??? Can you see the mark of the toenails at the end of each of the three toes? Tell me I'm crazy. ??? Now buddy, THAT is real freaky. :o

Also MM, hmmm, why would somebody hide THAT and not an old Morgan or a gold ring or whatever? Hmmm, could it be the "key" to the actual treasure, obviously well cached, that is surely still hidden there? ??? I wouldn't be giving up on that place, ever, as long as it stays there and doesn't turn into a parking lot. I think this old keyish thingy is a real trophy! So far in your detailed uncovering of the past here, this has turned into quite a little adventure for us all. 8)

Thx again for sharing. Go get 'em MM.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Thanks Larry.
Now here's a crazy idea (and longshot) that I had thought about. I know it is nuts, but I was wondering if something (coin) could be hidden UNDER the lead that was added to the original key piece? That sounds crazy, I know.
The three pieces (bottle, jar lid, and lead key) that I found hidden behind the wall may have just been garbage to the person who placed them there when building the house. To me though, it was like finding a treasure, since they have to be pretty darn old by the looks of the house. I'm not giving up though. It has become my quest to find at least one old coin on the property if nothing else.
Also, I just received my "Cache Hunting" book by Glenn Carson that you recommended.
I just started reading it last night, and it is some good reading.
By the way, when I first saw that key, I saw what looked like a paw print too. :)
Thanks,
MM

Man Modern,
I love the looks of that old place, you're still hunting it aren't you?
I especially like that it's in my state!!

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Ram,
Yep, I'm still searching. I haven't really searched much outside yet at all. I've been trying to find that hidden cache in the house first before it falls over or gets knocked over. :) I've also dug out in the privy about 3-4 feet down so far. I keep coming up with bits and pieces of broken bottles and dishes. Also about 5 different pair of nylons so far. Unfortunately no coins in the nylons. Gee, now that I think of it, I have my 25th wedding anniv. coming up soon. I wonder if I could give those to my wife?
It's the thought that counts, right? ;D Just kidding ladies.
Hopefully, I can post some new finds from this place soon.
HH.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Hi there MM, :) Hope you've been pokin' around in the ol' place again in the last few weeks. ;) She's a real keeper, my friend! I'm glad to hear you got Carsons book. Did you get to page 52 yet? One of the best in the whole book I think. ;) Neat how you saw the print in the key, too... :)

Have a super day!

Yes Sir. I've been poking around two places lately. I was a Poopologist last week digging out the ol' privy on the one property. I only found a few things from the 1950's in there, and they were shallow (<2ft). A very nice TNET member has graciously offered to make me a bottle probe. Once I have that, I am going back to look for an older privy location probably right around the current one. The house was built in the early 1900's, so there has to be one or two more locations somewhere.
Yes, I am just about done reading the "Cache Hunting" book by Carson. Very interesting read, with some great info. I just purchased another treasure/cache hunting book called SEARCH! by James Warnke. This is another great book to check out. I bought one years ago, and loaned it to a buddy. He misplaced it, so I re bought another one. I would suggest this book to anyone who searches old houses & properties.
Hope all is well up North.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

wow, neat pics! id be swingin anywhere i possibly could amongst those trees, the coins youre looking for might be all over the area. good luck!

one time i was in this old house and it had a sandstone walled basement. well ONE stone had no mortar around it. i removed it and saw something back there! my heart was pounding. it was heavy! all wrapped up in brown paper. i thought to myself omg i found something good. well i opened it up and there was a gun inside. ??? not worth much either but it was a fun experience anyways.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Moonshine,
I'd be happier than a pig in mud finding that hidden gun. How old was it? Did you keep it?
Very neat story.
Thanks,
MM

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Miner,

That's a wonderful looking piece of property!. . . the kind that keeps the heart pounding.
You might want to keep an eye out for any loose-standing metal pipes (2 or 3-inch diameter) that seem out of the norm; A perfect location for stacking coins.
I'm looking forward to Part 3.

Take care and good hunting,

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

MM, Super post and pics. What an awesome site!! I am very jealous.

Allow me to add my two cents regarding the “key”. It looks like the added metal was done to strengthen the key which appears to be deteriorating based on the 2nd picture. The indentations were probably made when the metal was soft to force it into the missing areas of the key. Unfortunately it looks like the business end of the key is missing.

Please keep us updated on future exploits at this site. HH
