PART 2 - "This Old House"

Well, the weather here in NC was cold and rainy today, so I decided to go back to the old property I've been searching since I could hunt with a roof over my head. As you can see the house is about on it's last leg. Other pictures provided are of some of the outbuildings and outhouse too.
Someone has discovered my secret hunting place, because a lot of boards had been ripped off the walls since I was there last week. I started ripping out boards that there around windows and doorways, that hadn't been checked yet. Well, guess what? It was my lucky day! In a small room extension (pantry?) off the kitchen in back, I saw the boards over the doorway had not been pulled yet. From inside the room I pulled a few boards and noticed a flat bottle sitting on the ledge over the doorway. It was covered with mice nesting material. (See pictures) My heart was pumping now. I slowly pulled out the nesting material, and the bottle. There was also some kind of key (?) up there, along with a jar lid (Boyd's Genuine Porcelain). Unfortunately, no cache. Darn! I just wonder why this was sealed from both sides, and if perhaps coins used to be in the jar lid? I know this isn't a mega-treasure, but to me it was an exciting find. In the outhouse, I dug up the belt buckle, buttons, etc.
In one of the sheds, I found a corked bottle with white powder in it. I have no idea what it is inside? I doubt this was Cheech & Chong's old place. ;D Well, that was my day. No big finds, but a ton of fun exploring.
Does anyone know what that key looking thing is that was behind the wall? It is heavy and looks like lead. Note the air bubbles in it when it was made. There is also a "+" stamped into it. Help?
Another long-winded story from me.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Wow! I love that old place!! I can only imagine what it was like when it was "alive". Glad your finding some neat bottles too. Sorry there wasn't a little cache in there for you. Thanks for updating us and.....

Happy Hunting!

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

MM,
Have you detected the woods area?

Maybe kids played in those woods at one time.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Ridley,
I haven't spent much time in the woods yet. I've been hitting the house and outhouse mainly. I did find a bottle dump area directly behind the outhouse. I found a fender & mirror from a bike, so there had to have been kids at some point. A lot of area to search. That hidden bottle really made my day. Makes me wonder what else has been hidden?

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Yeah,

That hidden bottle was really interesting in the photos!

I'm curious,...is that normal to find bottles and stuff hidden like that in the
framing?

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Rod,
I've heard a lot about hidden stuff around door and window frames. Today I was able to see it in person. I just wish mine would have been in coin form. ;D

I know.
It's best to look for the big score cache first I guess. Just remember. Kids are responsible for many of are best finds! Take a gander around them woods and try to
imagine a fun place to play.

Or even better. An old tree fort! ;)

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Nice bottle! Looks like a good place to hunt. Just be careful and don't let the old place fall in on you.

Nice ! Your killin me here ! It's freezin and snowin and i wanna detect ! :'( I'd dig the outhouse if i were you could be some good shi...stuff there ! ;D

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Man that bottle may very well be a cache. Some of those old meds can be quite rare and very valuable,it also looks to be in wonderful condition. Looks like it rinsed right out for ya. Im guessing it looks so good because it was never discarded and buried. Looks to me like maybe somone had a little habit and that is where they kept 'the stuff'. I live in Indiana and had a couple of friends in college who were from Goshen. It is a really small town so I doubt very many of that particular bottle were produced. You can go to antique-bottles.net and have a look around. If you post it there someone will identify for sure. I bet there are a ton of those bottles at the bottom of the privvy,or buried in the old ones, good luck with that bottle dump you may make some really good finds there,HH...Shoot

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Screen the privy and the bottle dump soil. The bottles are great. Sometimes bottles are much more valuable than silver coins. Keep hunting that site, it's bound to have some more great stuff around.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

looks fun,

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

I'd be real curious to find out what that white powder is that is in that small bottle.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Man, what a neat old place. I would definitely check out that bottle dump. And you never know what is hidden in the walls. About 12 years ago a buddy of mine found a 45 Colt Peacemaker and a Confederate 10 dollar bill in the walls of an old house. Both were in good shape.

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Jeepers ModernMiner, ya had me goin' there fer a bit. :( I didn't see any more input over on your original post after Papa and I tossed in a bit-o-our input, so I'm glad now to have found you alive and well over here on your new post, episode 2. :) I had been out of here for a while and over at my other TH'ing board lately too, sharing a few laughs and some goodies with the kool folk over there, so I've decided to spend most of the day in here to-day and make up for some valuable lost time. Time to catch up to waz up... ;D

Thx so much for taking the time and having the patience to shoot that wonderful old collector bottle ( In what appears to be at least Mint++) ;) right where she lay, live. Tons of people would have dove in there in a big rush only to still, feel disappointed after it all. You good buddy, were not only clever enough (lucky maybe ???) and then generous (large word these days) enough to carfully record it and then share it over the miles with us all, you also s-l-o-w-e-d everything down and extended the xhileratin (sp) of the whole experience, for YOU And, all of us, your readership. And what, all just so that we may enjoy a part of the thrill you felt, even better? This says much for who you are and sort of why you are feeling all these Kool feelings at this point in your life dude. 8) Actions have always spoken louder than words! Your words seem to be well chosen my friend and from the heart and definately Xite us here esp. with the visual additions of your "live scene creations" which we eagerly vacuum up into our homes, whenever we see your posts. You're one of our favs already mr. man... 8)

By the by, after soaking up all the good input from the folks above, here's my Cdn. 2 cents worth. 8) I'd be spending all of my time in that main house. while your lucky enough to be able to do that. Dangerous, sure just act accordingly, yer judgement seems fine enough so far buddy. The fact that you found any kind of well hidden object(s) at all is testimony enough that time will be your enemy here. Either the house will fall down in due time or someone will buy or inherite it and have that whole "timeless", for you right now at least, piece of realestate, turned into a mini-mall or subdivision or parking lot even! Glenn Carson, one of my long time Hero's in the TH'ing world, speaks often of slowing down in order to speed up, in some of his books or and articles. He means of course, to be to be really very thorough and inspective in your think first and then your actions, second. And, to a large Xtent, to never, ever, hurry, in the normal sense of the word.

At other, more between the lines kinda moments, Carson also mentions that a smart TH'er can turn that around ( as strange as that may sound to many? ) and still make it work out well for him/herself. 8) How, :o well by speeding up, to slow down, of course. ;D Yup. Ponder this... ;) Swift mind, slower, better, more accurate worker! ::) Only you can decideMM just how and when and how fast or slow this wonderful ol' relic is to be worked on. Sure looks good on ya, whatever way you work it friend. 8)

Ain't it great that everybody in here has somehow shared and somehow then, participated in your TH'ing adventures? Thx agin for sharing pard...

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Cool, wish it was my hunting ground.. :P

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

Larry,
Thanks for the nice words. The bottle is in mint shape as you guessed. I really got a kick out of seeing it was from Goshen, Ind. , as I am originally from LaPorte, Ind. which is close to Goshen. Of course, some hidden coins would have been icing on the cake, but just the thrill of finding some hidden items behind a wall was so cool. At first I was a bit discouraged to see someone had found my spot and had ripped a lot of it out since last week, but you are correct in saying "slow it down". It looked like they had been in a big hurry, and had missed a lot of good spots still. I started looking for areas that they (and I ) had missed in the past. Areas that were still sealed from both sides of a wall, or not fully visible. Armed with a hammer, pry bar, flashlight, and a mirror, I began to search. That is when I found the hidden bottle area in the pantry wall. You can bet I'll be back there very soon looking for more. I still have not found an access to get into the attic area, and it looks like my competitor hasn't either. Next trip, I'll try to remember a ladder. I don't plan walking around up there, because the structure is sketchy at best, but I will poke my head through at least.
Thanks again,
MM

Re: PART 2 - "This Old House"

MM, I'm mad,you didn't come and get me :( Naw,just ribbin you,but remember,the still belongs to me ;D
I think? not 100 % sure, but your Metal with the dog ears looks like a old clock key.The added weight with the "+" has me stumped.
