I think i may upgrade detectors sometime next summer after i get the last one i bought payed off. I didnt want to originally because i didnt want to have to dig all the nails and all that junk but i think i may just hunt woods only, no parks or other stuff. And of course the beach when i go to the cape. btw- im going to the cape friday afternoon till sunday, gonna try my luck at those paths i found the sterling charm on last time.

Good to hear there is some one in that area on this forum. It has been a long time since I have hunted that area. I found it very difficult to hunt the woods, too many briars and lots of dense bushes. If you are living around Murphy I'm sure you are familiar with the Hiawasse River, there are a lot of places that was used for swimming and picnics. Talk to some old timers around Andrews, Marble, Tomotla or Murphy. I have had some luck on old store sites. I was born in Marble, went to high school in Andrews and my grand parents lived on the Harshaw Road in Murphy :'(shore miss them mountains. I probably haven't helped answer your question :-\. Wish you lots of great finds.

Thanks for the tips, I will try all. Yes I do live in Murphy, down off the four lane (64), four miles from the Tenn border. Don't know when you were back at Harshaw RD, but there tearing it up to put in some big four lane highway. All around the Cherokee Golf Course.

But anyway, thanks for the ideas, as soon as I can get out, I will post anything I find.

It has been about 4 years since I have been to Murphy, the state bought some land from my family due to the new road. I'm hoping to get back up there soon. Looking forward to your posts. HH Millie

Did dust off the detector the other day and took a walk through the woods on my property. The leaves were pretty deep, but did catch some signals. Nothing of any value, found some old bolts, couple of small cans, and a few old nails. Hope to get out to a few more places, but it's been raining. Looking to get out and around Lake Notiley and its pinic area.

the detector i have right now i never have to dig a nail :)? I have heard that any good detector will find nails on disc or tone mode :-\? Are you saying good detectors will NEVER find nails?? I wish they made a good relic machine that could find other iron relics besides nails and cans ::)

Any decent detector can discriminate out nails. With any decent detector you can figure out the size of a target. The target response of a nail is going to be a lot smaller than say a railroad spike, axehead or horseshoe.
A metal detector SHOULD be able to find nails. That's what metal detectors do. They find metal that's in the ground. But a metal detector is only a tool. It's up to the person that's using the metal detector to figure out how to use it and learn what the detector is telling them. The more sophisticated the detector the longer the learning curve.
There are lots of fantastic and sometimes valuable relics that are found with metal detectors every week. So your wish for a detector that will find other iron relics besides nails and cans has already been granted. Years ago. :)
