Our new trommel we built. Any critiques out there?

The front end of the trommel frame has 1/2"-13 threaded rod with feet on the end. Once we found a good height for the front end, I didnt want to risk setup drift from the vibration so I put a 4x4 under it. Now that idea will be revisited. I am thinking of maybe a pivot point on each end of a wide bar the width of the base and then run the 1/2-13 threaded rod through it on both ends. This will give more contact area for the base instead of small feet. And the angle from side to side can be set easier.

Looks nice. Maybe a solid area before the screen starts to help wash the material better before it drops into the sluice. Good luck.

There is a 6 inch section of solid 10" ring with spray right in the front end after the hopper. It is well liquefied before it hits the trommel screen.

Looks to me that you got it right....hard to improve on it:occasion14:

Thank you...I am sure I can find something to improve on it. I just dont want it to get too darn heavy. lol

Curious, ballpark what were the material costs?

Approx $1000 in materials plus approx 40 hrs in labor, (welding, grinding, cutting, autoCAD, etc.) Then Powdercoating - $120.00. We are looking at selling them for $1799 plus shipping for the 10 inch model. I have a 14 inch model designed, 8 inch model and 12 inch all designed.

Thats one nice looking machine.... Nice job ;)

That is my goal. To create something useful and continuously improve on it and make it available for a fraction of the cost of the comparable setups. I think the feedback is extremely valuable for refining any setup as it would be impossible to guess what people would want. At least the feedback I get can help me understand what people want and why they want it.

From a fellow Hoosier and trommel builder. NICE JOB :icon_thumright:
Maybe I'll see it in action on a creek somewhere this year.

Thank you Sir, I will mostly have it out here in south-eastern Indiana in a creek behind my house. Unless someone can get us in to other creeks in Indiana around Martinsville? My wife and I have only heard good stories about the area but we don't know anyone out that way as far as permission goes.

Check out White River near Martinsville :icon_thumright:

Are there any points of contact I could call or stop by to ask for permission? I'd hate to get my kids all packed up for the drive and get there and get turned down...lol. We are down on sand creek in Greensburg. Its about 2 blocks from our house but Martinsville is a good ways away. We always wanted to go out there but we don't know anybody along the creeks or river. Any help on that? I could get you into sand creek pretty easily if you want to ever come out.

I just saw the photo with your trommel in the snow by the creek on our clubs website, I see you enjoy the Polar Bear outings.

Sand Creek is where I found my largest Indiana picker at the Cottonwood camp a couple of years ago. Only been there twice.
Would like to try a different area of sand creek if you know of one. Jim has dredged the heck out of Cottonwood camp :tongue3:

Here's a photo of my 15" trommel build shown at Sand Creek.........

As far as entry onto White River I don't have a contact. We put in at a public boat ramp and went from there. It's been awhile and since I wasn't driving I'm not sure exactly where it was but there are plenty of good areas on the river to prospect.

I'm sure someone in the club has a source.

Right now I'm in the process of building a 5" Gold n Gem river dredge and installing it into a 14' pontoon boat. (5" is the largest Indiana allows) Will be traveling the state hitting the larger rivers with it later this summer. White River is definately on the list!

I have no clue of road or street names, sorry. A call to a local boat dealer around Martinsville may help you find a public ramp though.
