Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

Hit a previous spot and decided to dig some iffy signals in front of this house. First dig was a nice old pocket knife. Second signal seemed funny but solid. Dug the plug and seen a rusty lid on the edge of my hole. Dug around the edges and seen a glass jar with it. Here we go, I thought. Pulled the jar out and it had a rolled up piece of paper inside. Now I am thinking...Map??? No such luck. As I unrolled the paper I was greeted with a dead parakeet. Oops. I rolled it up again, gave it a short ceremony, and put it back where I found it. Didn't want the owner to get upset if it was one of his childhood pets but the bird actually seemed preserved pretty good. Sorry, I didn't feel like taking any pictures of it. Anyway, dug a few relics but only a couple wheats. Please feel free to chime in on the relics if you know what they are. I am wondering if the one decorative item was the top of an old key???

Strange find. I would say that is one for the book.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

Love the knife and glad you performed a nice re-burial..

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

too bad, thats my luck too, well my brothers luck. He came across a fruit jar buried under an old tree and came and got me I stared looking in the hole at the lid, thinking OH YEAH, this is what you read about. Well he pulls out the jar and it was some kind of slimey animal looking parts. GROSS BIG TIME. Not sure what it was or why it was buried but he reburied it quickly. Glad to know he isn't the only one that finds this weird stuff.

Item on the top right is a valve core remover. Is it female threaded on the othe end? if so, probably an old valve cap.

Old_Okie

That's what I was thinking.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

The top piece is some type of door latch. I found a few of those, who knows for what type of door. Nice knife also.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

I believe I have dug a couple of Dogs. Those pesky collars and tags ring up good every time. :tongue3:

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

That decorative looking thingy might be something used to wind a clock of some sort maybe...

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

Ain't that about the way it works? Dig a cache, and get the bird instead!

Good luck! I like the knife!

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

I hadn't noticed before but the piece on the top right has some writing near the top of it. This is the best pic I could get of it but I think it says...
The Dill Mfg. Co. Cleve, O., Pat. July 13, 1915

The rear end of it is hollow down about an inch and has a wierd female fitting on the inside. No threads out near the edge.

The other piece might just be part of a wind-up clock, not positive but part of the stem is broke and not sure what was there before.

Thanks again for your help guys and gals.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

Gotta agree with old okie on the valve core tool. The latch is the type that were used on Ice boxes, before we had refrigerators.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

I dug up my first [and I hope last] parakeet in a heart-shaped tin box last year. There was birdseed, a small mirror, and a couple of charms buried with it. That one went back into the ground. - Jim

LOL! Thats a good one, dead bird in a jar. It will be hard to beat that one it surely would be unexpected.

Re: Oops! Wasn't expecting that dig!

Y'know, I think that "door handle thingy" is a cabinet latch from an old (OLD) cupboard. I sorta remember seeing something like it at a friend's house when I was a kid. They had an ol' farmhouse kind of place, with the original kitchen stuff still in use.

Very nifty finds!

p.s.
meant to add about the parakeet - glad you reburied it. It just seems fitting.
