One trip out, fours firsts. Barbers, Buttons, 2 Cent & Tokens ( lots of pics)

Yesterday I got a chance to detect a family friends property who recently passed away. I spoke with the property manager and he seemed a little iffy on the idea of me digging holes. After chatting for awhile I received a green light, but with a small window. The place is going up for sale and he doesn't really want me back"digging". I REALLY need to change his mind somehow.
My first hole was a Indian head penny. As I started I quickly realized this place had never been metal detected before. Long story short I dug.
2 - Barber Dimes
12 - Indian Head Pennies
13 - Wheat's
2 - Silver Quarters
1 - 2 cent 1865
1 - 1836 R&W Robbinson Button Maker Token
2 - Eagle buttons ( One is an older style, both are Staff Officer Buttons I believe)
1 - Marine Button
1 - V Nickle
Cool Suspender Clasp
1940's toy tow truck
Elgin Pocket watch which I think the outside is gold
3 - rings (2 brass one gold plated children's ring)
Misc............ stuff

Oh man... if I had a hunt like that, and limited time to hunt it, I'd stay until I was sick of it, lol!

Super nice assortment of old finds!  You are definately on land that was occupied by Union soldiers.  The puffy eagle button is a staff officers button and the other one is a general service button.  The marine button is most likely civil war.  The 2 straight pieces with US on them are interesting.  Not sure what they are but also most likely civil war.  I would try anything to get back on that property.  Bake him a cake, buy him a twelve pack,  offer him a few things that you find.  Sites like that dont come around very often.  Good luck!!!

Marc

Marc- When you say puffy eagle button do you mean the one with the green patina?

Brian

He means the muffin-style button with the back coming off it.

Both this button and the marines button probably had gold gilding at one time.  Be SURE to clean these with Aluminum Jelly--Gently!--to keep the gilding on them.  Refer to my post in the Cleaning and Preservation threads on "Cleaning Buttons"

That house is not that old--unless I'm mistaken.  There was something there before that house was built.  And your search area may be Huge.  If the woods in the photo are part of the property, you owe it to yourself to try your luck there before you leave! Eventually, I would ask at the neighboring properties as well--no matter the age of houses there (if they're close by to this property and you're still making finds in the woods..).  You should eventually find out what was there before that house was built...but for right now--just DIG.  Don't even take the time to clean up finds and post yet.  Get the finds made first.

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

Spectacular finds on a spot that we all dream of finding! wish ya would have included the dates on all the coins so I could drool even harder! Is begging on hands and knees out of the question to get a return hunt? lol

Whats the best way to find out what was on this land earlier? I know in 1930's aerials the building is there and not a whole lots more. I can't find that area on Maptech's 1800's topo's. Tax records or plats at the library?

Slipperyjack47 - I'll post the dates when I get them cleaned up.

What are you doing on Tnet?! Get out there and DIG.

1800s plat maps, tax records, contemporary accounts of militia musters, troop movements through the area, early military maps (since some of the finds are military), asking old timers if they heard any stories about the property, finding out if there is a church close by or possible picnic grove there (is there a creek running through the property?), deeds, the Tract Record, and librarians and special library collections and archives, and old newspapers.

I'll tell ya one thing--that many coins just Do Not come out of a yard.

Best Wishes,

SWEEEET site indeed! You just dont come across a site that gives up that many old coins very often. I wish you luck on getting permission on a return trip. 8)

Many people moving into older homes appreciate the history that goes with it.

Have you considered the cliche yet often smashingly successful shadowbox of artifacts and descriptions?

A few of the interesting items given significance through identification and provenance, and presented in some attractive and displayable manner, maybe would change the mind of the realtor.

Your angle of course would be that these tangible items of historical importance mostly to any owner of the home, would stay with the home, and potentially be a small item of interest when showing the home.

I am sure there is more there. Good luck!

He means put your finds in a display and use them for an advertisement to sell the house and metal detecting.

Killer Haul, WTG

Keep @ it and HH!!

Re: One trip out, fours firsts. Barbers, Buttons, 2 Cent & Tokens ( lots of pics)

Great hunt  If you are up for it you might offer to do some yard work there for the privilege to hunt. Good luck and HH Charlie.

WTG on the great finds Brian  you have an awesome site there
I think your photo's say it all Chestnut > Grove < > School < meaning ?
mid to late 1800's Grove Late 1800's school and it's a beautiful preserved one - room school house
early grove could explain the military buttons, coins, and costume jewelry "4th of July celebrations"
etc. and the school - coins, rings etc. The thing with the U S looks like what was a pocket knife to me
i know i have a record of 11 injuns in one day from an 100yr. old unsearched grove and you beat my
record  as far as getting back in there.....the grove i searched i found 50 injuns total and
any double dates - 2 of the same year pick the nicer of the 2 of each yr. and put them in a display
case and offer them to the caretaker maybe add a barber dime too you lose a few and you might
gain many more of the same or better "Good Luck" on getting back there for another chance !!
