I am into old toy trains, and you've got me on that one.

Definitely not O gauge Lionel.

Is this HO scale? How wide is the difference between the wheels?

Cool dig. Very detailed. Looks like it was a nice toy once-upon-a-time.

That is a 4-2-2 steam engine, used from around mid 1800s to 1900.
The 4-2-2 refers to the 4 front wheels on 2 axles, 2 drive wheels on 1 axle and 2 rear wheels on 1 axle

taz - That is an amazing pic! Look how well it matches the detail on the relic.

The locomotive in the pic is called a Dean Single. Built between 1891 & 1899 for the Great Western Railway.

I still not 100% convinced that the train that the OP found is an engine.

Could it be a tender, or some type of flat car?

It reminds me of an American Flyer piece that I saw somewhere, but cannot place what it was.

I still think this is an early HO piece, possibly a rare Lionel OO scale, or even an S gauge. It would be nice to know the width between the trucks so we can narrow this down.

Same type of engine here...

I think i searched for '4-4-2 toy locomotive' or something similar to that.
Those old steam locomotives were classed by wheel arrangements. Middle number being the drive wheels.
