Hello all., I went out today on my lunch break to an old school house that I have found some late 1800's coins from. and also found rosies up to 1950. lol SO today I dug this unusual ring and was wondering if anyone may have any info on it. At first I thought it had a stone that was missing but looking closer that hole is on a pretty thick part of the ring and there is no fascets to hold a stone. the hole is about 1/16" in dia. has a slight bevel at the top and bottom side where it comes through the ring. Anyone have any info on this I would really appreciate it! it has a sun on the front where the whole is, rain on one side and flowers or plants growing up on the other side. it is probabbly worth noting it is solid and not stamped like a lot of the older kids rings.

Moja strucna oblast je numizmatka. Da li dolazis ponekad u Srbiju?

Не, никада нисам био у било којој балканској земљи. Али ја имам рођаке који иду назад с времена на време. Већи део моје породице је у Канади сада. Какав новца уради студију у вашем раду? Да ли ископао или ти сачува?

If you're next going to discuss a good name for a mastiff you might want to PM him. Otherwise, back on topic please. I feel fairly sure the original poster didn't want the side-tracking rampant in this thread.

Agreed 100%!

Quite a hard one to date.

On the cleaning question, don't shine it up, it looks great.

Yeah it is a cool looking multiple-color patina! But then part of me is curious as to whether there's any identifying marks on the inside? It would look great with a new stone (or sunny colored glass) put into it, I think.

More bad information on how to clean copper/brass or bronze, and on a item that has already been cleaned, hence the purple colour. Looks to be a later type ring, 1900s+, but like said above the style of ring has been around for some time.

...sorry, Viminacium is an expert in antique coins and their conservation....I would listen to his advice.

Am I the only one who sees the archangel Gabriel on the front of this ring? Look closely at the NEGATIVE space. It is the silhouette of an angel (see the wings at the shoulders?) holding a sword in front of him by the pommel -- point down. Gabriel is frequently depicted holding a sword. My guess is that the hole on the opposite side is meant to shine sunlight through. Looks like you could interpret it as "heavenly light". The stars probably also signify heaven. It could be a secret society ring of some sort -- perhaps that is why it is difficult to see what it really depicts.

I think I may revise this a bit after looking at some of the symbolism associated with Gabriel. Apparently the moon is sacred to Gabriel as are the colors, violet and silver. That may explain the colors on the ring and what I thought might be the sun (perhaps the moon instead?). I have also seen a lot of white lilies and fleur-de-lis (French stylized "lilies") in imagery of Gabriel -- that may explain what I took to be stars (blurry photo) on the opposite side. This is apparently a ring with religious significance.

Update:
This may actually be the Archangel Michael. Gabriel is apparently more often seen holding a trumpet, while it is Michael who wields a sword. Sorry, I am not really an expert on angels. ;-) Gabriel was the first to pop into my mind, and then I did find images of him with a sword. I guess I am not the only one who confuses their archangels!

Translation...
'It really is a shame that many people do not appreciate the differences in language. I do not speak Serbian (but I speak Russian) and I speak Spanish and some Arabic. It should not matter where you are, your education is still the same. If you are a coin archaeologist, expect questions from me from time to time ..."

I agree that oftentimes we English speakers like to think we are the only educated people. Just because someone does not speak a language as well as you -- a native speaker of that language -- it does not mean that person is uneducated. All those high and mighty English speakers who think it is okay to humiliate others with spelling corrections should try speaking their minds in a language that is foreign to them and see how well they do. Even when you understand and speak a language slightly, the nuances of slang and common usage are often beyond you. Please be more considerate of others -- this is a world-wide forum, not an Americans only forum. All contributions should be valued for their content -- not the relative ability of one person to use a language only some of us call our native tongue. Please don't be ethnocentric.

I can see what you're talking about, but I believe it's just coincidence.

What sort of coincidence? If that is not a figure holding a sword point down in front of it, then what do you think that particular picture is? I am curious what the rest of you see.

I believe it's just a star, maybe a shooting star. And I believe it's a coincidence that it looks like an angel. But that's what "I" see and believe. I'm not argueing with you, just giving my honest opinion.

Here is what I see -- sort of. This is not my best photoshop work -- just a 10 minute job, so don't laugh. At least you get the idea. I think...:laughing7:
