Hello all., I went out today on my lunch break to an old school house that I have found some late 1800's coins from. and also found rosies up to 1950. lol SO today I dug this unusual ring and was wondering if anyone may have any info on it. At first I thought it had a stone that was missing but looking closer that hole is on a pretty thick part of the ring and there is no fascets to hold a stone. the hole is about 1/16" in dia. has a slight bevel at the top and bottom side where it comes through the ring. Anyone have any info on this I would really appreciate it! it has a sun on the front where the whole is, rain on one side and flowers or plants growing up on the other side. it is probabbly worth noting it is solid and not stamped like a lot of the older kids rings.

The 'style' is called a signet ring. They were very popular in the 1960s, and those with flat/smooth tops were often engraved with with the owners initials. Since it is not a precious metal, thus inexpensive, the hole in the top probably held a synthetic stone that was glued in the hole. I like to find jewelry whether expensive or not. Interesting find, Breezie

As Breezie said, it looks like a ring from the 1960's - 70's. I had one of that style in the early 70's with my initial on it.

Not sure exactly how to research it. "rain, sun, shooting star, brass ring" is not very specific search criteria...

It is still a cool find.

Signet ring was popular from Roman time... i think it is older than 1960. This ring had patina and lost it and for that you need very long time period or very sour or fertilized ground

Thanks everyone, Should I clean it or leave it as is? If I can clean it any ideas how? it is a neat ring and I would at least like to see it with a little shine again.

Is it a heavy ring or a light-weight less expensive ring? This really doesn't have anything to do with cleaning it, but I was just curious as to its weight. Cleaning it is entirely up to you, but if you'd like to see a light shine, you might want to try a 'quick' lemon juice bath. You can use straight lemon juice or either add a little salt to the juice. If you use lime juice and salt, be sure to have some Jose Cuervo with it. :laughing7: (Just kidding) Be sure to post some after pics. Breezie

Dont clean it... it wont be so atractive and authentic. Dont know why so many people insist in cleaning. When you find bronze coin for example it have green patina formed for many years. If you clean patina coin dont have value for colectors, looks ugly and new, and doesnt look authentic anymore. When you clean it you clean his history. Salt and lemon? Geez! Worst combination for bronze or copper. You should use that if you want to destroy something... or for cleaning silver and gold which are metals immune to acids(without combining with salt of course).
You should clean that ring with pure(my sugestion-destiled)water and teeth brush. Just brush it for 1 minute than let it dry. After that put it in parafine oil for one hour. Get it out and wipe it with something(my sugestion-microfiber). You should have nice ring in found condition and protected/conserved for keeping, and also it will have some value if you decide to sell it one day.

A. You are comparing the cleaning of a 'coin' vs. an 'inexpensive' ring. I would never clean a coin.

B. You are comparing cleaning copper & bronze, when I was speaking on cleaning brass.

C. A quick lemon juice bath/dip, Aluminum Jelly, or Naval Jelly are fine for cleaning brass if you would like to bring out the gilt (if gilt is present.) The owner wanted to see a little shine.

D. Do not use a tooth brush because the bristles will remove the patina in the cracks. A wooden flat stick is good for cleaning the surface.

E. If you want great detailed instructions on cleaning relics, search for BuckleBoy's cleaning methods.

Dubs, you might want to use a Q-tip dipped in lemon juice, Aluminum Jelly, or Naval Jelly and clean just the inside of it to see if that is the look you want. Is the underside to the top hollow or solid? What size (approximate) do you think it is; could it fit a man, woman, or child?

it is solid, I would say it would fit a woman, it fits my pinky abut I do have smaller hands. I dont have a clue on size.

it is good to remember that although this forum is in English, we get posts from all over...in fact many "banner" finds are not U.S.

With all respect... Yes, but breezie is from US. It is easy to talk English when you are from US, but in some parts of world when you have knowledge of English like me you are professor or you are gifted?

First of all, I was not mocking you. I don't mock anyone, but I do offer my opinions to help others in the 'What Is It' category. I had no idea where you live since it is not posted under your avatar, nor is it listed under your profile.

Secondly, You, on the other hand, attacked my opinion when you said, 'Salt and lemon? Geez! Worst combination for bronze or copper. You should use that if you want to destroy something.' Dubs simply asked about cleaning, and I gave my opinion.

Third, your replies have overtones of anger. I come to TNet and have for several years because I enjoy seeing what others have found, and I also enjoy helping others ID their finds. This forum is about opinions and if an opinion differs from yours or mine, then so be it. There is already enough stress and tension going on in today's world, especially after what has just happened in Connecticut, that no one should add any more anger/stress in what is supposed to be an enjoyable forum.
