A woman called me, two years ago, and asked me if I would come over to her, deceased, Mother's home to locate the property stakes as she was selling the house for the estate. I knew that the house sat in a subdivision of, only, four homes that were built in, what used to be, a very old park with a pavillion. She stated that the Pavillion sat in her Mother's yard and the yard of the neighbor's home. I said "yes" and asked if I could walk around with my metal detector. She said "sure" and it didn't take me long to get there. I located stakes and proceeded to scan the property with my detector. In two days, I dug up 14 INDIAN HEAD CENTS, ranging from 1864 to 1907, 2 TWO CENT PIECES, 1865 & 1868, one 1901 BARBER QUARTER, one1875 SEATED LIBERTY QUARTER, five SEATED LIBERTY DIMES, ranging from 1876 to 1878, and eighteen WHEAT CENTS, ranging from 1910 to 1946. By the way, in ONE HOLE, I dug out the TWO CENT PIECES(back to back), and three of the Indian Head cents. I thought that I was in Metal Detecting Heaven. The house got sold and I haven't ventured back, yet.

Those coins are incredible!
I would go and try to hunt that entire area very carefully. You just don't find that many old coins in one day.
You've got yourself a real virgin site there.

Two cent pieces...I am envious! I can say that I have not yet found one of those. Found a Flying Eagle cent about six years ago but no 2 or 3 cent beauties. That many pieces of Seated Liberty Silver coming out of the ground in two hunts, goodness. Quite nice. Go back and dig every worthwhile signal. There may be some very old jewelry or other interesting finds laying about, not to mention the fact that you didn't find any nickels! "V" nickels or even Shield nickels would seem to be par for the course. Heck, even a deep 3 cent silver coin can merely whisper its presence. How deep were they on average? Let us know how the next hunt goes!

CHAPTER 2 OF THE OLD PARK SITE......I went back to the old park site, this week, and knocked on the door of the homeowner to ask permission to hunt it, again. He said that some guy had spent quite a bit of time, one day earlier in the summer, hunting his yard. He said that he made a deal for the guy to give him all of the Indian Head cents that he found and the guy gave him three IH's. I can't imagine how much more that guy found that he didn't tell him about. Disheartened, I asked if I could walk around his yard with my detector and he pointed to an area and said "you can hunt that area, up there." Unfortunately, that wasn't the area of the yard where I found all of the above coins, before, and was an area where I, really, hadn't found much, the other time I hunted, there. I was disappointed that he limited me to a certain hunting area as I wanted to hunt his whole yard, but I figured that it was better than nothing so I hunted it and all I found was a 1902 Indian Head penny. Disguisted, I got into my van and left. If I had only taken the advice of people on this forum and gone back there, sooner. Live and learn. I guess that will be the last chapter in that great hunting adventure.

I couldn't believe my eyes as I dug each coin. In 30++ yrs. of metal detecting, I've never uncovered that many Seated coins or Indian Heads in one place in one day. The two 2cent pieces, even, made it better. It was quite a hunting adventure. I regret that I didn't get back there earlier, this summer, ahead of the other guy that got permission to hunt it. I hope that I can discover another spot like that. When I posted the "Old park finds" picture, I had forgotten that I had pulled out the 1872 Indian Head and put it into a 2x2 folder. Notice the nicks that I put in it while probing. I thought that I was smarter than that but, apparently, wasn't

i think we have all nicked a nice coin or two. even if you waited too long to go back, you are still damn lucky to have found this place and to have dug the amazing things you did. its really is pretty amazing.
