Used in barbed wire fencing in midwest. Is it just a locally made item? Or are they found elsewhere? Patented? Any info appreciated

Interesting. Looks like a WWI iron fencepost for barbed or razorwire. I suppose someone could have got some surplus.
There's a website currently selling them in England for 10 pounds/ea that have the point on top like yours.
