Ship's compass, S. Thaxter & Sons apparently was in business from 1822 to 1919, they were importers of and dealers in nautical & surveying instruments, charts, nautical books.

Here's link to search results with many pages, I saw several compasses just like yours at some of the websites listed in the results, as well as many other nautical items.
