I've been researching and old church grounds that dates back to 1876, where the Township Reunions where held every other year for 13 days straight with camping, plays, games, and alot of other actitvities. Well after a month or so of research and some time off, finally! from work. I decided to head for the area and see if I can locate its exact location. With alot of help from the land owner I managed to find the exact spot as there is nothing left at all to let you know that anything at all was ever there. The farmer was a little hesitant at first about giving me permission as his cattle graze in the area and he didn't want any of the new born calves spooked and run into a fence. Luck had it that he was feeding the cattle and said I could hunt for about an hour and a half while the cattle were with him. I spent the first 45-mins or so checking out a Beautiful pasture I though my be a hot spot but unfortunately, I was wrong. I started working my way back to the general area where the church once stood and started finding the general 22 cal. shells as well as old shotgun brass. Then as I moved up on a flat just above where the church stood
I got a Solid signal that bounced the number just a little around 59-62. Down about 5 inches was my first Indian Head Penny this year. About 3-feet to the southeast of the indian head the F75 pick up my first silver for the year also, a 1905 Barber Dime in decent shape. Before I was having to leave I picked up two more I.H. pennys a 1910 wheatback, a Buffalo nickel and a Gold Item that I have no idea what it is...The photo below show the area I hunted. The tree to the right closest to the camera with the Vine attached to it was where the Barber Dime was found the rest of the coins and the Gold Item were all found on the flat ground ground area thats about 30 or so feet in diameter.Hopefully my next trip will prove even more fruitfull. Ya gotta love this Hobby...I know I do!

I Started hunting just below where I found the first coins and wasn't 5-minutes before I found My first target an 1893 I.H. by and old tree stump at around 6". I thought I was right where the church was but I started looking around to the east Low and behold I found the Old Foundation to the church. The Farmer told me the church was just east of the road, but turn out there were two Old roads. As I was looking around the foundation the F75 was very buisy with all the iron and trash that was there, so I switched From the JE mode to the DE to quiet it down. I got a solid
signal around an old Oak tree and recovered a wheatback penny (191and just started to walk around when the F75 let out a Hight Tone, I pinpointed a shallow target just below the surface and recoverd a very nice 1906 I.H. iwent another ten feet and got another target that was Very shallow also! Turned out to be another Barber Dime in
about the same condition as my first one, this one was a 1903.I ended the 3-hour hunt picking up some early date wheatbacks an old oil lamp
part that feeds the wick.....

This photo shows the two roads one on the left just visable and the one on the right. I found the coins on the first hunt in the area in the middle. The church foundation is to the right of the road that is on the right in the photo

Too Much, Duggr! 8) Your pics remind me of a place that I heard was an old "reunion/revival" meeting place called the Grove. I've never hunted there but with your kindly shared story here, I'm going out there tomorrow to check it out. 8)

The, Research Lesson, is VERY evident here my friend, in your post! ;)

For ALL you newbies out there, make sure you do your share of it or you WILL NOT be diggin' too many Lil' Injuns nor Barbers either, for that matter! :o Diggin' up "old stuff" is SO much Cooler, than pullin' modern day clad crap from the ground! 8) SO, as Mr. Duggr shows here in this post, do your HOMEWORK to score the older treasures that "pull you back in time" with a rush from the past that I swear, you can feel! :) Believe it or not, I've had the hair on my arms stand straight up while reading the date on an oldie, that waited underground for over a hundred years, for me to rescue it, not three miles from my apartment...

Did ya get buddy a mess o fresh cats yet, friend Duggr? ;)

Your right! If it wasn't for the research all these finds would be lost. I think a majority of us detectorist that stay with the hobby are history oriented people who enjoy finding the things that those folks of the past have (if you will) left for us to find, so it will remind us of a period of time when life was simple (not easy) and folks would come together and enjoy the fellowship they so greatfully appreciated because of the bonds they established.
Now days with men and women both having to work for a majority of the population to support their family,it seems we have lost alot as a whole. How many familys today I wonder, even have a dinner table where the family gets together at the end of the day for fellowship. Yes the landowner gotta a mess of fresh Cats!!! ;D

Nice follow up, Duggr!

Ya Duggr, I like the simpler times those old targets represent as well. I could buy 3 blackballs for one cent when I was a young boy. Now you'd be hard pressed to find any kind of candy for a dime even. Times are a changing...

Smooth move on the wet kitties plan, there buddy. ;)

The land owner even has a few old stone foundations lined up for me when I'm ready!
I beleive now I will be able to take a friend with me to help clear the church grounds of
all the I.H. and Barbers and hopefully a Gold Coin or two.

Sounds like that landowner dug those cats then, eh Duggr? ;) More, old foundations! Wow, what a neat old spot you have there for sure, foundation city! Should be a lot more goodies coming to light there soon, especially if ya can bring a TH'ing buddy to help ya now. 8)

All the best,

LarryB

Duggr,

Great stuff! And more to come for sure!

I'm doing similar research on a Methodist Camp Meeting spot (1890 - 1930) in my area. I hope my luck is as good as yours.

I wonder if your gold what'sit is part of a book/bible clasp? Pretty common back then...

Thanks for sharing.

I think the Gold Item could be a hair piece of some sort.....Thanks everyone!

A friend Mike (Madjack) and I are heading out this weekend to dig some more History!
I think it's going to be a Good Weekend If it stops raining that is.....I also found the house
that had a small grove of trees just south of it where they held the sunday services before they
had a church built. (1850's) Hopefully I can get permission there also! This area I'm searching is
loaded with history as the old church I'm searching is not to far from the Mississippi River.
The old farmer does not allow any rock hunting in the creek bed and I can see why as there are Geodes
laying all over the place and probably plenty of other spear points and exct.I saw a old Log home there
to but not for shure if it's original or not,so I have a long way to go and alot of places to hunt. Looks like
it might be my best year so far and all Because of some persistant research.
Doug

Your temperance medalion may be of historical value dating from the prohibition era of your area. You might want to check it out.
