Okay, don't laugh but can I find anything with a Garrett ace?

My father in law backed out of helpiing me buy a nice detector, he says he'll just "borrow' mine :'( so all I could afford at this point in my life was a 200 dollar garrett ace off ebay. Was this just a waste of 200 dollars or can I find some of the cool things I see people here find? I don't have it yet but on my family's land there are at least 10 homestead sites. Unfortunately I'll have to take the old geezer with me on most, I only know where 2 of them are! Let me know because I'll relist it and keep saving if it was a stupid purchase. Sara

WELCOME SARA ; I think for a Learner Detector, you made the right Choice. I'v never used one, however I am hearing alot of good things about them. In My opinion, You'll be happy with the Choice. HAPPY HUNTING ; jeff

Sara,

Absolutely a wonderful choice. From my own experience and after reading the stories of other 250 owners, if you can't find something with this machine you probably forgot to turn it on! Light learning curve, simple controls and a very effective machine. A tip: hit the - Sensitivity down until you reach about halfway down the bars, and use the jewelry mode, This will cover gold, silver and coins but will keep some of the crap out.

Bravo on a great choice, and hurry up and find something so we can see some pics!

Sara, it should serve you well . Learn it and you will make the finds. Ive used garretts off and on for years and have made some nice finds with them. The 250 will probably be my next detector if only as back up for my shadow
keep us posted on your sucess

I have said this so many times because it's true: almost any MD is good if you are familiar with it and have experience in the field! Garrett is a very good brand and not to be concidered an "el cheapo"! I think you will be more and more happy with it as you gain experience! The key is gettting out there and having fun! ?;D

good luck and happy hunting!

Okay Machine

I used one a few years back and they work just find. Of course they are not the same as a $1000 machine but they do find stuff. I dug up several coins from around 4 inches and some from 6 inches. No worry there. The machines do just fine.

Advice I would give to anyone just starting detecting.

1. read the manual carefully and then read it again. keep it with you while you practice.
2. take a few coins out on the front sidewalk and practice with those. do what ?the manual says to do.
3. pay attention to how the detector responds to these coins and how the responses are different. dime penny quarter silver-coin gold if you got any.
4. hide coins under newspaper and practice pinpointing. (this is you big challenge to start). Thats because digging the hole inthe wrong place does not work. If the coin if 4 inches away you will not find it. You should be able to get within 1 inch every time. This why I say use a newspaper to start with.

Now you can try the front yard. You will quickly discover pinpointing is more important than you thought. Try to avoid 12 inch wide holes. It is important to make small holes cause people get upset if you dig BIG holes in their yards. ?

Read the manual again.

Now you are ready to start. Find a friend who likes to hunt for coins and go out with them.

There is a chance someone sold you a bad detector. If it does not work like the manual says try asking someone around you who uses them. Also contact the manufacturer and the person who sold it to you. Or take it to a repair shop.

When you say it doesn't find anything this couldmean
1. the batteries are dead and the detector does not work.
2. the detector is broke and does not work.
3. you do not know how to turn it on.
4. you do not know how to set it to find coins.
5. there are no coins there
6. you only hunted 5 minutes and gave up.
7. your search technque is so bad you cannot find anything.
8. you were searching correctly there is just nothing there.

The detector should find something.

Try pennies on the sidewalk first. If it does not find these try to reslove the problem. Do this before you move on.

It is not possible for you to have used on a few years back. The garrett ace line was just released late last year. perhaps you are talking about a garrett treasure ace? sara said she was considering buying one off ebay, she merely wanted opinions of the garrett ace line, which includes the ace 150 and ace 250.

Howdy Sara

You did get a good detector. I have used Garrett for many years and I call the one I have now my coin machine it wont pass a penny by.
Don't be to disappointed if your first few times out you dint find much at all. It will take practice to learn how to use it.
So take the old geezer with you on your first few hunts to find out where them old houses are and he will decide MDing isn't for him and then the hunting is all yours
and as you get more use to the MD you will start finding a lot more.
Just keep bringing him the junk you find and telling him you need to charge for the trash cleanup service.

And do everything cachenut said + overlap that coil EVERY time and hunt in a pattern and don't get in a hurry and start jumping around.

Re: Okay, don't laugh but can I find anything with a Garrett ace?

Sara, Have no fear. I ordered the ACE250 on eBay, and it is a great deal!! Just got it on Friday and took it to the local city park beach this morning. I only found a few pulltabs, which register the same as rings do, but I didn't dig a single piece of iron trash like nails or bottlecaps! Don't worry, you ordered a GREAT beginners machine!!!

Re: Okay, don't laugh but can I find anything with a Garrett ace?

The Garrett ACE 250 is a great machine for the money. I have one along with a number of top of the line detectors and it finds stuff just as well. It has depth reading, sensitivity adjustment, tone id, notch discrimination and is made by a reputable company that has been building detectors for many years. Ultimately, the operator has more to do with finding treasure than an expensive detector. Just look at many of the finds posted on this message board and you will see that treasure is being found with all types of detectors. Good luck with your new Garrett! Jim Cal

Re: Okay, don't laugh but can I find anything with a Garrett ace?

Just saw some pics on another site of a bunch of gold coins from a scattered cache that were found using one of those machines.

Read the owners manual over and over and over and over till you understand everything the detector can do. You will find more good stuff when you can utilize your machine to its full capabilities 8)

Re: Okay, don't laugh but can I find anything with a Garrett ace?

Sara77,

From what I have read you should be fine. One way to get money for your next machine ( there will be a next and a next) is to rent it to your father-in-law when he want to use it. Razne Frazen Cheapos!!!! Tell him you have been told that loaning things to family or friends is a good way to cause problems. So a business (rental) agreement is the best way to keep peace in the family.... ;D

You can find anything you swing the coil over within range of the machine's detection capability and your willingness to retrieve it. The question is, will you enjoy doing that?
