Obama On George Zimmerman Verdict: 'Honor Trayvon Martin' By Stemming Gun Violence

Posted: 07/14/2013 3:08 pm EDT | Updated: 07/14/2013 3:56 pm EDT

President Barack Obama released a statement Sunday on the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, urging Americans to honor the slain teenager by acting to curb gun violence.

Read Obama's full statement:

"The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin."

On Saturday, a jury found Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman had pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.

UPDATE: 3:55 p.m.-- The Justice Department also released a statement Sunday on the Zimmerman verdict:

As the Department first acknowledged last year, we have an open investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin. The Department of Justice's Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial. Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction, and whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the Department's policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial.

This is nothing more than "selective harassment" driven by racism on the
part of the Gov't.

The verdict after an in-depth trial of "NOT GUILTY" came from 6 of the man's peers, and
the American Justice system has spoken...and that should be the end of it. What is
going on now will only further fuel racism within the black community.

Interesting. A Jury of 6 decided that Trayvon Martin was trying to "hurt" Zimmerman and got killed in the process. So, what does Obama do? He ties it into Gun Violence! Isn't it amazing how our President takes every opportunity to push his political belief's - such a shame...

The Feds can retry him with enough effort.

They did it in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania
USDOJ: Two Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Men and Four Police Officers Indicted for Hate Crime and Related Corruption

Although I wanted him found guilty because it wasn't about Zimmermam standing his ground,
so much as he purposely put himself in the situation where he was told to avoid, and where it could & did escalate.

But Personally Now that it's over, I hope it's over. Getting Boreing Now
the Fat Lady Sang :(

& Old News imo

put himself in the situation where he was told to avoid?...you got the facts all wrong...did you watch the trial or are you still going by what the media was reporting before the trial...he did exactly what the 911 operator told him to do when he told him to do it...I cant believe people still think he followed Trayvon after they told him not to...incredible...power of the media is alive and well.

We also found out that this case WAS about racism after all...Trayvon was the racist and proved it with his creepy ass cracker comment...so he was commiting a hate crime when he attacked George...media sure can get things mixed up.

You nailed it big time!!! People only know what the media tells 'em...Striving for the truth is not high on most people's list of priorities! Listening to the liberal Media is...just.....so......much........easier :sleepy2:

:dontknow: I don't watch the "media" for anything out of my Tri-County area :dontknow:
(when I do catch something from out the area it's accidental :laughing7: or here)
& I realy didn't care enough about the case to follow it. But since I moderate here, I do read a bit more from You people.
(the old "If it doesn't affect, me, My family or you's,
it's just a waste of my time" theme :tongue3: )

I'd swear I read here over & over, he was told to stay in his car.
(Let the police handle it ? )
right up until the verdict came back,
& until now nobody said it wasn't true :icon_scratch:
at least not where I read.

You have read that over and over but thats not what happened...he did what they told him to do, when they told him to do it...the trial brought out the truth...the false media reports is the reason this went to trial...Obama saying Trayvon could be his son didn't help.

Hey all, If I am wrong about this I'm sorry and will be happy to learn the truth, but the way I understand it from the trial coverage is this...GZ, inside the car followed TM and called Police to report what he called suspicious activity on TM's behalf. The police told GZ to stop following TM and he did. The Police wanted to know which block so GZ got out of the car to walk up to a house to see the address, TM was nearly a block away by now. While GZ was walking back to his car TM turned and ran back up the block and jumped GZ, saying something to GZ to the effect of, "this is your last night to live" then the fight was on.

...If that is not what happened I will truly be happy to know what really went down instead, and will thank you for it...If GZ was told to stay in the car and he got out anyway, that was foolish, but no cause for a murder convicition....Respect for all...Tim

You can believe that story if you wish but the only other person who really knows what happened that night is dead.

EVERY part the story Zimmerman told was corroborated by all the evidence.

What really bother's me about the Govt. getting involved with a possible civil rights/hate crime trial, is that the lead prosecuter becomes that highly intelligent AG, Mr Holder, who will botch the proceedings lie, connive, and end up making a mochery of our whole justice system..His solution would be to give arms to Trayvon's family, setting them loose, and sit in his office watching," Fast and Furious", and hopin Vin Diesel could solve his problem.

Enough is enough.....He was found NOT GUILTY, by a jury of his peers, he has his firearm back, and problebly will need it, and one family needs to get on with the grieving process, and everyone needs to get on with life. Constantly debateing and overanalyzing the outcome does nothing more than keep festering wounds open and unhealed. Justice ,right or wrong, was tried, and aquitted,......Move on!

Unfortunately that will be hard to do, as as Feds talking about trying him in fed court. They couldn't convict him in state court so now they are talking about going after him in federal court.

What I really like about this is honoring a person who has committed burglary, been kicked out of school a couple of times, etc. Sign me up!...just the sort of person we all should look up to, and try to emulate. And, according to Obama, just what his son would be like, if he had one. That's the truest part of the whole thing...LOL

You've got it all wrong...you say "the way I understand it from the trial"... It was not a police officer he was talking to, it was a 911 dispatcher and HE WAS NEVER TOLD TO STAY IN HIS CAR...he did what they told him to do, when they told him to do it...if you don't believe me , look it up...I don't know everything but I did watch the trial.

Jeff, Ive always respected you and the common sense you bring to TNET and I still do...hope you didn't take anything I said personal.

I stand corrected. I was equating the 911 dispatch department with the Police department, my mistake!
(I refer to Winged Head of Liberty dimes as "Mercury" dimes too! ...I hate semantics) :dontknow:
