NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

Haven't had this much fun since the first time i had sex....(i was alone ;D)...anyway...went to a bank in Patrick Earl's part of town ....an old bank in an old part of town...asked the teller...do you have any half dollars....yes...can i have $40.00 worth.....sure no problem....saw them as she was handing them over....never saw these rolls before.....they had cardboard on one end
coins 014.jpg
and...WOOHOO :occasion18: :hello2:...tarnished silver on the other
coins 015.jpg
do you have many more rolls....yes we have lots :o
coins 016.jpg
opened all 4 rolls before i realized they were all 1963 Ben Franklin's....and all were VF to MS.... :occasion14: :icon_cheers:....anyway ran to the mac for more money...went back and got the last $120.00 worth...all the same rolls and all Franklins....7 with 1963 Bens showing and 5 with the Liberty Bell showing....best educated guess....all 16 rolls of 1963 Ben Franklin Halfs.....320 f0r 320 :icon_cheers:
these must have been the original rolls from the mint....how else do you explain 16 old rolls containing the exact same coins....these rolls have been sitting in this bank for 45 years before my scroungin ass found them ;D....WOW my first virgin bank ::)
coins 013.jpg
coins 017.jpg
coins 012.jpg
coins 022.jpg
coins 019.jpg
coins 021.jpg
blue book says VF to MS...$7.00...
...now the questions...
do i open the last 12 rolls ?
do i cash in and if so are the unopened original rolls worth more?
if i cash in do i buy silver ingots?
should i hold onto them?
do i sell in singles, rolls or the whole lot?
man do i need help :tard:
does the price of silver affect these coins

The dealer is probably right about most of the coins you have, but from the first pics you posted alot of those coins are still gleaming with original mint luster. If just a few of them get mid mint state grades then you can sell them for an increased numismatic value. Maybe consider taking a handful of the ugliest ones and trading a coin dealer for a book on how to grade american coins, and a 5x or 10x loupe. Then spend some time grading the coins so that you can sell them for an even higher profit!

i remember reading that the bens weren't very popular anyway and in 1963 there was something like 22 million made.I just thought that if they weren't popular then they would have circulated more, therefore there would be less in the condition these coins are in. From checking books to web sites on grading bennies i still say these coins run from EF to AU..just don't know how high AU they may run.

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

Mistergee,
An unopened roll like those is worth 10-12 xface. That dealer was trying to pull a fast one. Remember, the most important thing is that you FOUND them. What we do is one continuous treasure hunt! That is why we are addicted, and what a wonderful addiction it is! May you have many more great finds and never let anyone rain on your parade.

thanks 50...i still haven't opened them yet...probably won't...i will sell some of them down the line...probably put a couple on e-bay as per Chicago Ron's suggestion. figured the guy was going to try and pull a fast one...in a way i can't blame him...it's not like he has customers standing in line at his door....the thing that gets me is i didn't indicate that i was looking to sell them...he could have been honest and told me what they were worth and then i would have asked him what he would pay for them and i'm sure i could have come to a reasonable price that he can profit off of and maybe even a better price for several or a roll or 2...now he has nothing.... shame on him....and your absolutely right it is one continuous treasure hunt....and since i was only looking to increase my silver stash...finding these beauties was icing on the cake...i got lots of silver and some beautiful coins....i'm still very happy...thanks for your concern though

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

Mistergee,

Great find. If you are interested in getting the most value for the coins I would not open any more rolls and stop stacking the coins. The more you move them the more dings they get. In numismatics each ding hurts and can stop a coin from getting MS-64 grade or higher. I recommend that you research FBL (Full Bell Lines) for the Franklin series, and if you can objectively look at some of the coins from the opened rolls you might find a couple that have FBL's. I would then have those coins graded by either PCGS or NGC in hopes that they grade it MS6x FBL.

For an example of the price difference. Here is the PCGS price for both a MS65 and MS65 FBL

1963 MS65 $50
1963 MS65 FBL $1550

Again, great find and best of luck.

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

There is another aspect to consider.

Since there were so many minted and the last year. I found myself sending the 64 jfk's then the 63 BF's off first when selling off junk silver. I would say that at this point based on my own habits and what I've read a 1963 Ben Franklin may someday be a rare coin. Especially if there is another runup on silver.......

Nobody seems to keep track of the melt........ But the rarest are usually kept and the heavely minted years are the first to make it to the melt pile. It could be possible that the 63's and 64 coinage production may very well have been melted off to 50% or less than listed......

Does anyone else feel me on this.......?

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

I'm with you to some extant Mojo.

It all depends on the silver supply though. There is an obvious physical shortage to small investors, but whether or not that means dealers are sending their stashes to the furnaces or not has yet to be seen. Even so, the high mintages are the ones that will be melted first obviously.

You got the 2008 Pennies selling in UNC form for above face because the shift away from good old stable lincoln.

It's all in the pitch "last mintage" type stuff.

GT...i only opened the first 4 rolls...the others are as i bought them....I only placed the coins as you see them in the pics and stacked them once befors putting each in protective holders...i looked very closely at all 80 loose coins and only found 3 that almost had FBL except for a very small amount of wear to the left of the bell clapper...a few were so close that you can read the words "pass and stowe" and under it Phila.the word under that is almost visible...while there may be an MS-65 in the unopened rolls...of all the loose ones i believe will only hit the top of AU at best...again i'm no expert but going by the guidlines for Ben Franklin Halves, i believe i'm close....someone else may have a different opinion...thanks Gt...BTW love the car

i think your right on the money...and based on the fact that these weren't the most popular of the halves i believe they also would have been heavily circulated, and therefore less coins in this condition

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

The speculation is that silver is set to rise again soon. If it does, these will go up accordingly. I think that dealer is pulling your leg, I think anyne would pay 7-10x for sivler reguardless of condition, and these are awesome!

Re: NUTTIN' BUT THE BENJAMINES BABY

Holy cow - thats amazing!!!
