Hi everyone,

Been awhile since I have posted anything. Haven't been hunting as much with the new baby and work. But the times here and there I got out they were quality trips.

I didn't show any relics. If you can imagine 4 full to the top folgers or maxwell house cans full of everything. To many pics and work to get it up.

I pulled just the interesting stuff. There was more but like I said this is just the best as of lately. This is the time of yr were I sit back and just hunt periodically.

To hot and the bugs and ticks are rough. I don't hunt anything other than woods. And they are grown in full. Today I had a nice day. 4 old silver coins in less than 2 hrs. And one was a nice 1897 barber half.

I'll give you a break down on the finds.

4 Indian Heads- 1906 1906 1905 1888
4 V Nickles- 1898 1909 1889 1906
1 Buffalo- No Date

13 Wheat Cents
3 Old Jeffersons
3 Barber Dimes 1900 1909 1908 D
1 1948 Rosie
1 Nice 1888 Seated Dime First Of The Yr
1 1940 Merc
1 1943 P war Nickle

And Finally 1 1897 Barber Half.

Hope everyone is getting out and having good luck

HH Jer

Thanks alot everyone,

I got a few good spots right now going on. Wish I could get out more than 4 or 5 hrs a week though. Can't wait till the fall comes.

I have been lucky this yr. This is my 4th or 5th silver half this yr. 2 are barbers already. I'm lucky if I get one silver half per yr. It is very hot and dry here right now.

Coins get scratched easily in these conditions. I hunt the woods alot. Seems that they are the only places left untouched.

Some great finds there and hope to see more!! Sweet Barber Half!!

Nice finds! I hope you didn't clean or polish that Barber Half. It appears to grade a strong AU-50, and if it is not "whizzed" or polished it is a $300 coin.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Very Sweet Barber Half. Also drooling on the seated dime as I haven't found one this year.

Some of the woods around here are very huntable but only if it's the "old" type with the big trees. Dry conditions in the woods are good if you find these type areas.

You did great, nice barber half and seated dime!!!!

Thanks alot everyone for all the nice replies.

The baby is doing very well everyone. Thanks for asking.

I figured the barber half was atleast a e.f grade. All that was done to it was rinced with soap water and a soft tooth brush. Then soaked in some olive oil.

It was a very nice coin. I knew it was a good one from how thick the rim was when I dug it. It also was heavier than normal halfs.

Mirage, The seated was nice to get. I'm sure you know the feeling. I never have found more than a few seated coins in a season. They are so tough to find.

You always think you got a barber dime. Then you see that lady sitting and your level of excitement changes.

Thanks again everyone. More finds have already been made since this post. I'll be back again here soon with some more goods for you all to view.

I hate to say this, but you probably hurt the coin's value. Camel's hair (or extremely soft make-up brush) and hard running water is always best, and adequate to the job almost all of the time (unless you're dealing with oxidized silver). Even a soft toothbrush will put scratches on the coin. It looked "whizzed" in the lower photo, so that was why I asked. What you are seeing in the "before" photo (in your hand) is actually toning, not dirt or tarnish. Olive oil will not do much for silver coins. People primarily use it on copper ones, at least those that prefer that method to peroxide.

Nice to see you posting some cool finds Jer! That half is just plain sweet!
Can't wait to see more

Thanks guys,

I understand Buckleboy. I have had more than one person tell me I hurt the value of my coins. I don't collect for the money just for pleasure.

I like to have a collection that displays well. I can enjoy it more then. My silver here gets so bad your not left with to many choices but to clean them.

Dirty coins just drive me crazy. I bet though I could still get a nice penny for these coins on e-bay. Alot of amateur collectors on there that can't tell the difference.

I also plan on holding onto these coins for atleast another 20 or 30 yrs. Wouldn't they tone back up some after all those yrs. Not every coin I clean.

I have left some really valuable one's alone. Dirt on them and all. Collectors hate cleaned coins. I know olive oil is for coppers. But it makes the silver look a little better.

Oh well what can you do. I can find more and it's the thrill of digging a coin like that more than the value for me. I may never get rid of my collection.

Thanks coinshooter,

Yes 90% of my finds come from wooded area's. Weather it's near old houses or parks or even just plain old woods. Alot of times I'll find a few old coins just looking for cellar holes and foundations.

Hunters have lost items also. Most finds are shotgun shells. But if you get a good hit it's usually a good old coin. I don't like to be bothered either.

Woods are natural soil still. I hate to hunt anything disturbed or back filled. Not many open area's left untouched out there. The best spots are hidden and now wooded.

Awesome finds Jer, several of them! Good to hear the baby is doing well. HH, Mike
