I found, what seems to be, a park that doesn't seem to be hit by others with detectors.

I spent an hour there this morning until my nice morning was ruined by two uninvited visitors. Luckily, they started barking while I had my headphones off and I was probing for a coin, that I did not retrieve. I looked up and saw, what looked to be a Great Dane/Boxer mix(huge!!) and a small Shepard(probably normal size but next to the other dog, it looked small!). They were coming my way. They didn't have collars on and they didn't want me there, it seemed. I didn't make eye contact and casually got up and headed towards the car which was about 50 yards away. They were approaching me steadily barking and hair raised. The last 10 yards was a sprint that landed me on top of my car with two dogs circling. They soon gave up and left. I didn't hear anyone calling them but they headed back in the direction they came from. I checked out my detector to make sure it wasn't damaged from the leap onto the roof, It was fine. This was not my idea of a relaxing morning treasure hunting!!

Thinking about calling animal control! Anyone carry pepper spray with them? I think I am going to get some for my bag!!

Yes, I think the "not intended for bears" thing is because those are smaller containers, and some are lighter concentrations of OC. The bear ones are much bigger. I had a friend who fell down a rock slope in Alaska with a big can on his waist. He fell hard enough to puncture the can which emptied on him. I guess he ran into a pond to try to wash it off, but he was miserable for a few days with the burning and irritation.

Thanks - I never saw one (that I noticed) that said 'stream' - all the ones I saw said "spray" (I think).

I have a little one that was given to me by my mother-in-law - I wonder about strength with age? I see the ingredient is Capsicum - that's what makes the seeds of peppers hot (duh to me - pepper spray), but some peppers get hotter as they age, some lose their bite as they get older.

Thanks for the site - I laughed when I saw "not intended for bears" !!!

I bought a couple of cans of citronella spray for a pair of my rescue dogs that get along just fine, but every so often just want to kill each other. Usually it's over food (both have been starved at some point in the past) but it's pretty frustrating. The citronella spray worked okay (plus makes the dogs smell nice and lemony), then next time around I employed a nearby shovel to break them apart, which as someone reported above does a great job, but after watching a couple episodes of COPS last night, I think I'm going to pick up a hotshot style cattle prod, see if that would work at all.

Thanks for all the replies!

I really feel for those who have been mauled by a dog. I have seen some pretty gruesome results of dog attacks and don't care to go through it. If it came to it I would have used my digger and detector as weapons but, I haven't had my detector long, spent some pretty good coin on it, and am really enjoying the time I get with it.

My concern with this whole thing was that there were TWO dogs. If it were just one I probably would have faced it and proabably got him to back down, although the great dane mix was HUGE. He made my 130lb Lab look small. I have been around dogs my whole life and don't like the thought of injuring one but, when it comes down to him or me, I know who would be limping away.

I am headed back to this park today to hunt it for a while with some pepper spray with me. I plan on driving around in the direction the dogs came from to see if I see them and speak to the owner about them. Wish me luck!

Thanks again!

That's sounds like a good plan Ground Hog.

Although I have never had any trouble with dogs there is always the first time, and your experience has me thinking that carrying pepper spray would be a good non lethal weapon to use against a dog attack.

Good Luck & Happy Hunting,

I love dogs myself, but there are bad dogs. Back in the early 70's, I had to shoot one that was in a dead charge straight at me. The same dog had attacked two other people earlier that same day. He was a family pet, well fed and cared for. The owner was a local preacher and he agreed that I took the correct action. Be careful out there guys. :icon_scratch:

Try this.......carry a piece of meat with you. I ride bicycle and yesterday I saw a guy have a dog chase him. He dropped something and the dog stopped in his tracks to investigate.

I caught up with the bicyclist and asked him what it was that he dropped.

He told me it was a piece of meat.

I thought that was a great idea.

I like dogs but hate the folks who let theirs run loose.
Have been attacked by "nice dogs" that were not on leash in parks. Been lucky so far.
I carry a firearm but would hate to kill someones evil pet.
Like the idea of ammonia spray - would work good on 2 legged animals too.
Any recommendations on a squirt gun that doesn't leak?

Grey

PS: Mrs. O.
Maybe dogs getting whupped with newspapers is why they hate mailmen and paperboys? LOL

I always use the smaller squirt bottles that they sell in the lawn and garden department. (the ammonia WILL eat up the innards eventually - you have to squirt some clean water through them once in awhile). You can adjust the spray pattern and most of them don't leak.

Hmmm - you know - I never thought of the mailman/newpaper connection - could be, huh?

There used to be a time when a lot of people "taught" their dogs with rolled up newspapers - I don't know how popular it is these days - now that we have the "dog whisperer". :icon_scratch:

Mrs. O, thanks for the squirt bottle thing. I think that would work best.
Am not sure what the whispering thing is, may be based on a movie about horses but never saw it.

Pick something mentioned here and carry it, just in case See link below.

I have a 13 year old rescued Keeshund than could be trusted to never leave the yard or bother anyone. The gentlest dog I have ever seen. I have never hit her but she is terrified of a paper or stick in my hand and will not let a man pet her.

After my neighbors put their dog under (for snapping at them when they gave him scraps) they started saving all their scraps for her and calling her over and now she cant go out untied with out running to their yard for treats, and will almost take off my finger if I give her something. Now she runs up to anyone walking or riding by thinking they have food for her and has had 5 near car hits running to my neighbors house anytime I turn my back. Not viscous, just loves treats. I asked them to stop and now they just leave meat scraps on their property line for her.

Ruined part of my life and all of hers.

Found some 100% ammonia at the dollar store !

Am working on the delivery system. Only found quart sized bottles but son says he has found smaller.

Is Goes4ever the only one who has tried this for stopping loose dogs?

Also was said to dilute it but I don't know how much.

I do not want to permanently hurt someones pet but WILL KILL the thing if it tries to eat me.

Do not want a close encounter of the bad kind so a spray (stream) of at least 6 feet sounds good.

Like I said, I do not want to hurt someones pet.

When a large dog runs at me to ? maybe explore? maybe dog hates my clothing? and the owner is yelling

" Killer come back" a bunch of times and dog pays no heed, I have only to assume the owner has no control .

I hope the ammonia spray will work.

I love dogs, in fact I am the guy that usually gets bit by somebody's pet after they tell me "Oh go ahead he won't bite". I don't have a problem with that, they are just doing what dogs do. I have witnessed packs attacking and it is a terrifying site. Two dogs constitute a pack! I carry a small caliber hand gun whenever I am out. I keep it loaded with what we call snake shot. You won't kill a dog with it but it will stop them. You have to ask yourself if the potential fine for carrying a weapon out weighs the pain and suffering of a dog bite. We have an issue with rabies out west so in this case I don't take any chances.

I was attacked by a large German Shepard years ago that actually lunged and bit the end of the my gun barrel.
The bullet exited the back of his head.

Course, city parks are no place to be firing a gun and MACE brand spray would be a better choice of weapon to stay out of jail. Even then, MACE brand spray is illegal to carry in some states. Pepper Spray is legal to carry in most ... I think.

I had a pair of boxers jump me in my own yard. TheNeighbor had been warned about this before. I opened ones belly with a blade , the neighbor jumped the other and held it, he also paid doctor bills and put the other down. Bob

JDS - I have a concealed carry permit so am legal.
Also as a back up weapon - a small .22 handgun.
I have shot the snakeshot into paper just to test it, have not yet found a snake that bothered me like a rattler.
Shot at a grouse at 25' and it had no effect. At 5' the paper patterned about 4".
Maybe just the noise would scare a dog, but if you hit it in the face I am sure it would blind it, not kill.
Then I would have to bring out the big gun to protect my life from the screaming owner who would want to maim me.
Really would not like that situation.
I have been on some concealed carry web sites posing the question of ammonia/vs attacks and the lawyers mostly say anything I did before getting hurt was wrong.
I might be seen as provoking the attack by a person by shooting their dog. (That was attacking me.)
Only thing to carry was pepper spray as it is labeled "For Defence".
(Even though my son and his friends in the military get shot with it and learn to ignore it.)
Bear spray could be argued that there was no "Bear" and I over compensated.
Well, that stuff cost $30 or more and a taser that fires darts is only good for 1 shot and much more expensive.
I was thinking that a spray bottle of ammonia might be nice to carry to "sanitise" things I dug up and keep germs away.
If I "accidentally" shot an attacking dog with it out of fear it would not be so much of a problem.
(If ammonia works. I have not heard someone say that for sure.)
Gosh, I am needing a much bigger tool belt to carry a lawyer too.

Grey

Good thought Woodwizard, have to try that on neighbors dog that barks all night.
Lighter than carrying a lawyer and plausible.
