I found, what seems to be, a park that doesn't seem to be hit by others with detectors.

I spent an hour there this morning until my nice morning was ruined by two uninvited visitors. Luckily, they started barking while I had my headphones off and I was probing for a coin, that I did not retrieve. I looked up and saw, what looked to be a Great Dane/Boxer mix(huge!!) and a small Shepard(probably normal size but next to the other dog, it looked small!). They were coming my way. They didn't have collars on and they didn't want me there, it seemed. I didn't make eye contact and casually got up and headed towards the car which was about 50 yards away. They were approaching me steadily barking and hair raised. The last 10 yards was a sprint that landed me on top of my car with two dogs circling. They soon gave up and left. I didn't hear anyone calling them but they headed back in the direction they came from. I checked out my detector to make sure it wasn't damaged from the leap onto the roof, It was fine. This was not my idea of a relaxing morning treasure hunting!!

Thinking about calling animal control! Anyone carry pepper spray with them? I think I am going to get some for my bag!!

If pepper spray is legel to carry where you live, it's probably a good idea - you're lucky they barked and you heard them before they were on top of you!!

Ive had that problem while walking to my fishing spot. Pack of farm dogs but one was a doberman. Nowhere to hide and I couldn't out run them so I held my ground and took a swat or two at the most aggressive dog with my fish pole and along with some loud yelling they backed off. They followed me from a distance and then gave up on me. If that ever happens while Im detecting they will be dodging my ace 250.

loose dogs = bad dog owners...I've been mauled by dogs twice as a kid.....next time I will defend my myself to the extreme

I used to carry some pepper spray, somehow never had it with me when I might have needed it. Oh well. One less thing to carry.

Wasn't mauled, but been bit by loose dogs. Wouldn't hesitate to stop attack.

Sorry to hear you missed out on detecting time. I'd try to track down the owners and take pics for animal control. Next time, those dogs might find a small kid with it's mom that would be defenseless against an attack.

I have had a problem with a dog before. A properly placed shot with a rock did the trick. The dog now will come and investigate me but keeps his distance and almost never barks.

Call animal control right away. Next time it might be a small kid getting attacked. anyway, those dogs need to be brought under control one way or the other. a nice fine from anmal control would motivate the owners to keep their dogs under control.

That stinks! You're also limited on what you can carry for defense depending on where you live.. I carry a two foot long prybar in my car-looks like a giant screwdriver with the plastic handle on one end and flat blade at the other. Never had to actually 'employ' it, but I have had two occaisions where just letting others know I HAD it was enough. For the dogs though, you best just carry whatever weapon you can at all times in that park! Seems like there are some sonic type deterrents as well but I'd have to go do some research on that. Naturally there are some SUBsonic solutions as well...

I used to have a dog chase me when I rode my bike thru the country, I filled a squirt gun with ammonia and when he came out barking and trying to bite at me I squirted him in the face with ammonia, he stopped dead in his tracks and never bothered me again

Most dogs do not like to be hit on the head with a shovel.

Get a nice shovel and wield it like you mean it. They will get the message.

Running away from a dog is like inviting them to chase you. Show them no fear and make them feel that you are not an easy prey and they will leave you alone.

If a dog is barking at you with teeth exposed, you have every right to smack it on the head with that shovel. They will get to know that you are in control, not them and they will leave you alone.

Pepper spray = yes - its legal here.

But, a small bottle of ammonia and water mix works great, too.

And, a secret I accidentally found out. People discipline their dogs by swatting them with newspapers. I got chased to my car once, and all that was in the car was a newspaper. I rolled it up and swatted at the dog - the vicious dog yelped, peed himself and ran away - I was pleased. I hope more people discipline their dogs with newspapers - - - - -

hate to hurt ole fido --but if he tries to bite -- I have a gator digger with his name on it. --bye bye poochie

I can highly recommend this if it's legal for you, or if you can get a permit.

When my wife was marathon running she carried it, often running 15-20 miles through rural areas. I believe she used it 3 times, always as a last resort when yelling and standing her ground didn't stop and it appeared they were about to bite her leg. Each time a blast stopped them in their tracks and sent them high tailing it away yelping. She didn't like doing it, but it had to be done. I always thought it was better for the dog than a .357 though. And actually it is better; you'd hit it with the fogging spray much easier than trying to shoot it while it's running.

When I run at night I've had luck stopping them with a super mega-bright LED flashlight; it blinds them and they can't see. I don't think it would have the same results in the daytime though.

I had to get my wife some pepper spray for her bike. The dog that attacked her ran from me and my knife. That was one time I needed a hand gun and did not have it on me. Be careful out there, not all dogs have four leggs.

Do different brands of pepper spray have different strengths? And do some spray farther than others?

I see pepper spray for sale at the local convenience stores, and at the local gun shop - different brands - is there a difference?

B

Yes, there are differences between them. Some spray in a stream to go further (but you need to be more accurate spraying). others spray a fog. They also have different amounts of active ingredients. The strongest use OC (I won't bother trying to spell it out), and even then there are different percentages in different products. Have a look on this page to see differences like I am speaking about.

Thanks - I never saw one (that I noticed) that said 'stream' - all the ones I saw said "spray" (I think).

I have a little one that was given to me by my mother-in-law - I wonder about strength with age? I see the ingredient is Capsicum - that's what makes the seeds of peppers hot (duh to me - pepper spray), but some peppers get hotter as they age, some lose their bite as they get older.

Thanks for the site - I laughed when I saw "not intended for bears" !!!
